Neowin Cancer Research

Recommended Posts

Well, since people don't like "loook at my 5 gazillion posts!" threads, I would just like to mention that I have finally obtained First Place on the neowin cancer research team!! :D

Seriously, right now the team consists of 139 members (ranked 123 compared to all teams), but has only returned 10,234 results (ranked 819 compared to all teams). Basically this means that our team is generally lazy, doing only 15% the ammount of work as other teams! :(

I first started crunching work units three months ago, with two mid-range PCs (~900 MHz). Two months later I added two 200 MHz clunkers that I built out of closet parts two months later. The end result was that I am now in first place, which means that it doesn't take very much to go far in the way of rankings.

I recommend that everyone download the utility and help support neowin and cancer research. Once you download the program go here and click "Join This Team" to become part of the neowin.net team. The program will run in your systray and will have a priority of Low. This means that when your computer is sitting idle the UD agent will take 100% of CPU resources, but if your fragging in Quake III, the agent will just about stop to give higher priorities the resources. I have never stopped running the agent and have never noticed a slowdown even when playing demanding 3D games on an 800 Mhz Dell.

You can also run the agent in screen saver mode only, however I do not recommend this as it slows processing down by a factor of 10, because the screen saver drawing is utilizing all computer resources.

If you have any questions about the program you can post them here and I'll be more than happy to answer. :) :)

I have just joined the team now and I hope I can contribute greatly to the team. I am not familier with the software but I have heard about it from it's beginnings. I am also known as (my real name) "Simon Pang". However, I was tempted to download the program for Alzheimer's disease though. You are actualy right, even though I look at task manager and see that this program is taking 100% of my CPU usage, I can not see any downgrade on performance. Just a wired question, can the program work if the computer is on "Stand-By"?

doubt it will work in standby, the reason you do not see any performace or negligible differences is because it is set on LOW Priority, so it uses up what is not being used :)

Good job Weasel. :)

I would join, but I've been on another team for while now. But hey, its all for a good cause.

For those that are worried about their CPU, you can set it to run as a screensaver only.

it's hard to imagine the guy in the lead has this app installed on over 1000 pc's. you would think that this would be me since I work at one of the biggest cancer research centers in the world

I am glad that I am running this application now, now I can convince that people who question me on what I am doing :D. I have read about this application in new Scients a while ago however, I never downloaded until 2/3 nights ago. Bah! I have been running this application for a whole 2 days now (never turned off my PC in three days!) but I see some have now have more points then me and of only running it nearly the same time as me (no I am not jealous,by far, just currious). I have only one machine but what am I doing wrong? At least I am doing this for the good of humankind.
