Racist Judge comments chinese female diver...

Recommended Posts

Tonight I was bored so I decided to catch a little of the Olympics on TV. So I watch Lao Lishi, a diver for the China team, and it looked like she wasn't performing the best and all. But then I hear a woman commentator criticizing her saying she didn't perform her diving really well because of her flat feet. And then she says that it's a flaw or something that Chinese people have because of that. So I guess it's because of that, that Chinese divers can't get that extra 'umph' when jumping off the diving board eh?

So how is it a racist comment to state that the chinese have flat feet preventing them from performing as well?

It's a baseless claim; a commentator should know better. Their Gymnastics routine shines some light on the topic.

So kame, u think saying that all chinese has flatfeet is right?

I have no idea what kind of feet chinese people have, but I fail to see the problem if it is true. There is a difference between stereotyping someones personality by nationality/race and make factual statements about their ethnic traits. It is no different than saying all chinese people have slanted eyes or golden skin.

Um, I don't know if it's true or not, but it may be. You make find it offensive, but there's a lot of natural advantages or disadvantages that differnet races have over one another. Of course we're all people, though, if that's what you mean -- group hug?

Sorry... just had to.

What's with you and all the racist comments, though? Are you on some sort of goal to prove that the world is racist?

But, the bottom line is was it the right thing to say -- probably not. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, you're going to get slammed by some ethnic group no matter what you say.

agreed. however, the thing in this situation is this: assuming most chinese people have somewhat flatter feet than the majority of the rest of the population (which i don't know for a fact, but i'll just assume it for this, for that fact alone should not be offensive to anybody...i mean, maybe having flat feet is cool to some people, i dont know), the problem is that this person apparently linked this supposed fact to an offensive personal opinion, thus being somewhat racist.

but i also agree with twyst3d, it's more stupid than anything else

Nothing's wrong with that, it's a comment on physical features. It's like saying a certain ethnicity tends to be tall.

Exaclty.

I mean, would anyone here want to crucify me for saying that Asians are statistically proven to generally be shorter than most other ethnicities? Sure, but it's still a fact. There's physical features that help and don't help every ethnicity.

Funnily enough, the Womens Chinese Diving team seem to be doing exceptionally well. I guess the rest of the worlds population have even flatter feet

you guys are missing the point. yes, you're right when you say it's just a physical trait (again, assuming if it is true which i dont know for sure). but i think the problem is with the fact that this physical trait of this ethnicity was linked to a negative characteristic (diving badly) and therefore it can be insulting to the chinise.

for example, dogs are hairy. i state that dogs are hairy and that is just a fact and not offensive or anything. but if i say that dogs are smelly because they're hairy, well then that is offensive to dogs. not the fact that they're hairy, but the fact that i'm saying they're smelly. (dogs probably enjoy being smelly than anything else, but i hope you get my point.... )

EDIT: i fixed the driving to diving, happy people? i'm glad you had a nice laugh over it
