Shifty
first of all, timdorr, the way my school issues ip addresses from the dhcp server is by mac address. so that way there are no IP addresses that will be the same since mac addresses are all unique. but you can change a mac address on a NIC. its not that hard to do. im setting this box up in my office and since i am the supervisor i can do it and keep it there as long as i want. as far as bandwidth is concerned i can always tell the hippie net admins that its a webserver used for educational purposes. i ran i by one of the admins this morning and he gave me permission. the only clause that he gave me was that i couldnt run it through my dorm run, which im not going to do. so i think its safe to say that this project can be done. pizza
Your cat5 network drop in your dorm room is NOT connected dirrectly or anywhere near the fiber T3's CSU/DSU. Do a tracert and find out how many routers it passes through before it gets to your buildings router. Also..don't forget that you'll be compeating for bandwidth with the other students in your building. With only a 10MB connection, I'd have to assume your school is using Hubs and not Switches in the wiring closets, although I could be wrong. Try more than one connection on a hub, and watch it bog down. I'm sorry, but with this type of connection, you'll probably be limited to a handfull of connections at any decent speed. It is simply impossible to run a server farm out of a dorm room. No university will be have the necessary infrastructure except in their data center. I wish you success. This woud be great if it worked! Maybe HostTyme can donate a server and network connection? :p

I'm honestly not sure if the OS fakes the new MAC, or if it actually changes it in the NICs firmware. It doens't work for all NICs. If anyone wants to try, I have done it successfully with Win2000 & a 3c905.

I hate to say it, but one of the uni's I am looking at is upgrading from an ATM network and is running a native Gigabit connection to every dorm! The worst bit is I don't think its the uni I want to go to....

Shifty
im working on getting the software and the box setup right now. im also looking for some dedicated and talented people who are willing to share some time and work with me on this project. i know that setting up an ftp server is easy, but im still hammering out some issues that other board members have pointed out. security will be my main goal tonight. im ellated that many people are interested. and the admins here have been quite helpful. i plan on testing the system tonight to a very few selected members to see if thing will run smoothly. also i would like members to post what they want out of this server or what features they would like to see. pizza, im looking into the routing situation right now to see where i am... thanks for the tip!! update: I have decieded that i will install 2 nics when the times come. i read somewhere that installing 2 nics will mean that a windows box will have 2 IPs which if true or possible will be great to spread the traffic a bit. if someone with greater knowledge can enlighten me on this matter please post!! honestly im not too keen on more than one nic jigs. CustardFD
I've never tried this, but I know it is possible in for Win2k Pro to perform load balancing so that both NICs work together and use one IP address. The option is in X-Setup. If you want the reg keys I can extract them from the script for you. Its probable that the it can be enabled elsewhere in Windows. I just don't know where. ab1225
Remember people, for the bandwith problem, where not hosting REALLY Huge things, just sigs and desktops(for the desktop monthly post), it would be reasonable. If we are able to keep the server clean, I do not see any downfalls. Now security wise, you should set it up for anonymous access, However give the power to change files to moderators, how you do this depends on the FTP serving program used. Overall people should be supportive, I do not see anyone stepping up and providing the service and time for this project. I will gladly help you Shifty, I believe this is a wonderful idea. ab1225
I believe it has time-out set considering it has to support so many people at Neowin. However, I will look into your problem. ab1225 Neowin FTP Co-Mod
