Krome
I think the owner of this site have the rite to protect their own ass... with careful review and such, I guess he had to reconsider for the time being but I somewhat think it's a bad idea to ruin NeoWin reputation if such complaint or lawsuit is at hand. One thing I am sure of is this. If the school finds out Shifty is donating the bandwidth to NeoWin, then they might be frantic about this. The school may ask him to stop or worst come to worst expell him. But other scenario is that NeoWin might get a kick in the back for supporting such incriminating act against the school's property. I am assuming the worst thing to expect. None of these might be happening soon though...
PM5K
Well since I didn't comment on that I will say that I think it's a bad idea, it will only end up getting shut down.

I cant find anything wrong with people donating their time and bandwidth for sigs and other legal stuff so I am not going to be difficult about it. I suppose I should be glad I have you around to make these points crystal clear to me.

Shifty
here is my university's policy on stuff like this: if its for education its ok!! all i have to do is talk to the net admins and a small review board. i think its ok. they may even let me join their domain so i can have "neowin.radford.edu" eh, whatever... anyways, the work is going along at a steady pace. tonight i should have the webserver up and uploading ready. if you would like to participate in the "Grand Upload and Download Fiesta Festival" here is the requirements: -Must have broadband or better -2 or more pictures to upload. sigs, avatars, screenshots. i would like people who are interested to send me a PM with: -your real name -the files you would like to upload (filename, type and size) i will take the first 10 people. i will close this offer at 7PM EST. this way i wont get my PM box flooded for the next couple of days. Shifty
ok here is the low down... me and ab1225 got the webserver up and running now all we have to do is enable uploading and a method of accepting uploads on a per user basis. this means that if you want an account to upload, you would go to the website fill out a form and then me and ab1225 would then create an account for you to upload as well as simple intructions to upload and download stuff. im not going to be a punk and put annoying limits on up/downloads, just incase anyone was wondering. ;)

newbdude
just a quick question for ab1225 or shifty, can either of you tell me who all is currently involved in the ftp? i.e. moderating, administrating, and help setting it up? Shifty
right now im trying to resolve the issue that no one can access the web server at all... i can through localhost or internally within the campus. im going to change the port number later today and see if that works. do any of you know if changing the port will screw anything up? this is the probably the last hurdle before me and ab1225 can go public with this. so expect the service to be up and running after 8PM EST!! Tim Dorr Veteran Posted April 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2002 oh sweet lord. leave it on port 80 PLEASE... nothing more problematic than "hey, you link does work" posts. they annoy me, sorry. and just to clarify: ftp.timdorr.com user: neowin pass: weonin http://dorm.timdorr.com/neowin/ set up in ~1 min :p of course, there was probably 10 minutes of set up between installing serv-u and going through the apache.conf related to this, but the actual action itself was simply adding the user account to serv-u now, question for swifty: what is between you and the internet on this machine? any sort of router/firewall, becuase I find it odd that you can connect, send, and receive to the ftp, but not the httpd.... *shrug*

More than likely the campus has port 80 blocked to prevent people from running webservers. Just change the port, and specify it in the URL when you hand it out. Same with the FTP, if you change the port, just make sure to specify what port to use.
Shifty
yup, igwanabob is right. port 80 is infact blocked for people trying to get into the schools network. i know that internal network webservers is permissable. im going to change the webserver port to something else... havent decieded yet. i appologize that this is taking WAY too long. i know that this is supposed to be easy and take less than an hour, but being a college student, working and other important priorities its hard to get extra stuff done. this week will be pretty slack for me so i can handle more neowin stuff. Tim Dorr Veteran Posted April 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2002 man, that network sucks. my school (georgia tech) has absolutely no restrictions in place. just don't abuse bandwidth or be caught doing anything illegal and you're free to do what you want. The only restriction they are considering implementing next year is a 50k/s upload limit to off campus. You're lucky though becuase your week is looking to be the opposite of my week. I an uber-load of stuff to do, so i'm kinda pulling my hair out right now :D
Shifty
ya my school here sucks... i mean there are over 4000 students. im sure georgia tech has 6 times as many students! i dont understand why as POS school cares so much about restricting http ports and what not. its rediculous!! [edit] i just found out why there is a restriction on port 80 and 21... some dumbass thought it would be funny to run a porn server from 8 dorm suites. thats 16 rooms with 2 ports in each room. this moron had about 25 cheap computers he bought from the schools auction for $5 a piece. from there he found that he could pay for his tuition, room and board, and buy a new car with all the money he was making. the estimated figure was about $6000/month profit!! well he got caught after 2 semester of being here and boy did he get it!! no one really knows what kind of punishment he got. the school installed some bandwidth monitors when they got complaints that the network was extremly slow all the time as opposed to having peak hours like they normally had and a week later he was busted when he was eating up 80% of the bandwidth!!! stupid douchebag ruined it for everyone. i got this info from my supervisor at work. he told me to just change the port all would be good. and since im running it from the office, i wont have to worry about exceeding any bandwidth restrictions
Cheif_Bigfoot
I'm glad that you are changing the port because my college (North Dakota State, 10,000 students) has the same kind of ristrictions for ports. Not sure if there was a porn server in the past but I do know that we can't (without some creative work) run a server here. We can run an ftp server but since they try to block access to that I doesn't run very good. I don't know what ports are blocked but just choose some obscure port so it won't be a problem for the students on here. BTW must be nice to have a slack week. Mine sucks. A couple of test and a couple of papers.

Shifty
as i right this me, brn2prgm and ab1225 are finalizing a long awaited service to the community. brn2prgm has uploaded his avatar and is posting to see if it works. if it does, me and the gang will then test it ourselves to work out any bugs and security issues and then the ftp/webservice will be officially opened. i would like to thank the community for their infinite patience and valuable input!! Jon
edit]i just found out why there is a restriction on port 80 and 21 Try its sensible (and standard) security practice for one. Reading this thread is scarey, someone with little experience in hosting a public service is being allowed to run it from inside a uni network, with little or no network admin consultation. At the very least, the ftpd should be hosted inside a DMZ. Your the one taking the risks though, its your education...! Jon

Shifty
ya, i got the permission from a board of network directors. they told me that if i didnt hog a ton of bandwidth then i was ok. if i did then they would warn me by email. so far things are going good. ab1225 is posting some stuff now to see if it works.
