Post Count Question

Recommended Posts

I read through the FAQ and ran a search, but I didn't find an answer for this.

How exactly are the posts counted? I'll post several to the same topic, but my posts number doesn't change.

Does one have to post to different topics to be counted?

I'm kind of curious.

I think when you post to a topic, it is incremented. If you post to a topic that is immune to post counts, then it is not incremented. Also, I think if you post a comment to a news item that is also counted.

Immunity to post count is like the "Person Before" thread.

Well your post count won't rise in threads that are in italics.

I had no idea. I take it the italicized threads are old threads then.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the speedy replies! :D

italicized means its post count locked, or, more correctly deemed "a post count ###### haven" so we remove the ability for people to post about every person before them or daily pictures of themselves and wind up with 1000+ posts just from that.

[sanjuan] has 2000+ in the person before thread. Which is a fun thread BTW.

That's my point though. We want post count to, in a slight way, represent how much of a contribution a member has made to the community. Something like that is why we have post count locked threads.

It makes sense for the boards to be set up this way, especially because of Neowin's community objectives. I certainly don't want to be a "post ######" so I'll spread myself around a bit.

Thanks again guys!

But judging a person by post count won't be accurate at times. bangbang023, you should have seen an example of it back in the Customising Windows XP forum, where a person asked for something (I can't remember what), and another member simply provided a link to Neowin's search page instead of really helping the person locating the thing he wants. He just wanted to take the oppurtunity to raise his post count, so that others can look up to him.
