super_evil_8_ball
Look in your network connections folder and right click on Loacl Area Connection and click disable. That should get rid of the icon in your system tray.
alfador
If you don't use it, just disable the network adapter that is being monitored.
AMPSV
I use the network but ocassionally unplug the hub for gaming purposes all I want to do is to remove the icon without disabling the network or removing the dialup icon!!

AMPSV
http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak2119.aspx that removes both as I showed this Reg item in my first post
The Burning Rom
As far as I know, the only way to remove the icon when the media is disconnected is to DISABLE the connection. There may be some obscure way to do it in the registry, but I don't have a clue as to where that would be. Personally, I leave my cat5 cable plugged in all the time and just disable the LAN connection when I don't need it (or I don't want people on my machine). Si Veteran Posted September 10, 2004 Veteran Share Posted September 10, 2004 Why not just right click your start menu, check 'Hide inactive icons', go to customize, and set that one to 'Always hide'?
ItchyAnus
If you're on Windows XP, try setting the tray icon to always hide.

Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted September 10, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted September 10, 2004 here.. this might help? lol
Joel
here.. this might help? lol No, because it will still show if it becomes unplugged. Although, why that little icon would bother anybody for short periods of time (as the poster said) is beyond me.
lunamonkey
Can you reshack the icons to make it a transparent one?
Webbster
I had this problem a while ago. The way to solve is to go into your network connections folder, right click on the network that is disconected and go into properties uncheck the box that says "Notify Me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" Hope this helps
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted September 11, 2004 Global Moderator Share Posted September 11, 2004 weird... i have a "network cable is unplugged" but it isn't in my system tray...
Si Veteran Posted September 11, 2004 Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2004 uncheck the box that says "Notify Me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" Thanks! I can't believe I have overlooked that every single time I have been in that dialog :| Edit: it doesn't appear to have any effect here :(
yingjai
same here... there is 2 options: - Show icon in notification area when connected - Notify me when this connection has limited or no connection even when i disabled both, i still see the icon in the tray... need to disable the icon because i'm on a laptop with max resolution 1024x768 and the 2 network icons takes up space.. i do not want to disable the networks when i don't use them cause at home i use wireless and at school i use wired to lan with my friend's laptop for games/etc.. so i basically use both frequently and disabling/enabling would be a hassle
Ryanjmchale
Quite easyily with a little time imho. res hack the netshell.dll in //system32 and delete the disconnected icon :)
yingjai
would that cause the icon not to show up in the tray? or just leave a blank spot?
Ryanjmchale
how about a 3rd party utility theirs tons of them like TrayProtect etc.. that lets you hide icons from system tray :)
yingjai
nah.. don't feel like installing more programs.. all those programs do is just put icons under menus in their program icon in the tray.. i think i'll reshack it.. but so many friggin icons folders.. which ones are the network connected and unplugged icons??? yingjai
oh yea.. also, tray icon hiding programs or the windows feature may not always work.. especially icons that change "status" or w/e.. they just create a new instance and is not noticable normally.. cgnyc1
Depending on your network adapter, you may be able to do this: Network Connections -> (connection name) -> Properties -> General -> Configure -> Advanced -> Media Status -> Always Connected Edited September 17, 2005 by cgnyc1
