Oceania is the offical name for the continent that's often called Austrailasia. I hate to argue this with an Austrailian, but are you sure?

All americans are taught in school that the seven continents are NA, SA, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica. I've never even heard of anything called oceania before...wait, wasn't that in the book 1984?

I also thought that New Zealand was just considered part of Australia...

Oh...

I'm sure technically, the continent is Oceania or Australasia but since the country and island Austrailia makes up most of it, it's probably become another generally recognised expression in many places.

Actually, I do remember in early Primary school the continent was called Australia by teachers.

Some quick research shows that it's actually Oceania, and not Australasia, which I thought. No mention is the Altas of Australia, apart from in the country sense. Something tells me Oceania is quite a new name - I was taught Australasia in later Primary school and Secondary School. I guess people thought, as I did, that Australasia makes it sound like a sub continent of Asia which only really contains Australia, which isn't true in regards to Asia and isn't fair as regards to only Oz.

About New Zealand - I do know that New Zealanders get very annoyed when you place their accent as Australian, much like Canadians don't like being placed as US Americans (although I can't think why).

EDIT: Just read what silly_walk linked to (he linked it after I started typing my reply) - that's a complete contradiction to what my Altas says, although it does make the point that what we know as continents actually aren't proper definitions - common usage includes political boundaries, which true continents don't - possibly Australia counts as a true continent, but not as a continent by it's common definition. It calleds Oceania Australia and points out that Oceania is not a true geographical continent.

It really depends on what you mean by continent. I mean the general usage, in which Europe and Asia are also seperate continents - although by true definition, they aren't.
