aco Veteran Posted April 5, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 5, 2002 The reasons have been stated - threads are moved with a redirect so the member that started it will know where it is. By all means, go out and find a hack that hides the moved posts from everyone else except the person who started the thread. Good luck. :D
TimeRider
"People just use General for everything, which defeats the object of all these other forums members requested themselves."-Neobond I would suggest that you are learning a valuable lesson in leadership here, in particular about the nature of requests. Everyone has their utopian idea of how the world should work. Now I realize that Neowin is not the world, but people tend to lay their template of beliefs over everything in their lives, including Neowin. Just because some of the people requested these additional forums doesn't mean that it is the best way to organize your community. Perhaps you should have said "No." If the number of redirects is any indication of the mindset of the majority of users, I would say that the information clearing house method is the preferred method for this forum. What I call "dump and sift filing." More than once I have also seen some one write something to the effect of, "I know this isn't the right forum but I needed an answer quickly." I think that the Neowin menu is overwhelming, and I also think it takes longer to get an answer here than it should, in some of the forums anyway. I think this is frustrating to people. I posted two identical messages, with a very simple question, one on Neowin and another on a similiar forum. It took ten minutes to get an answer on the other forum, I'm still waiting here. Perhaps one solution would be to hide the "sub" topics from the main menu and treat the forum more like a file tree. You could have your main topics listed on the "Forum Launch Pad" with the following main headings: Tech Support Forums Community Discussions File Sharing Since most "Newbies" (I don't believe this is true either) who are responsible for all of these ill conceived threads would undoubtedly use this roadmap, at least they'd wind up in the right place. Once the main heading is clicked, the appropriate sub headings would then become visible. Might I suggest that the board then be trimmed. For example, the number of threads that are in the Win9x section are about 10% of the number in the XP-2K section. Maybe it would be appropriate to just have a Windows help section . . . the same with the "Customizing" threads. Overclocking and PC modding could easily be merged with the Hardware section. Having been involved in other forums, I can tell you that one of the biggest issues for success is how easy it is for people to get what they really need, not what they think they need. I cannot tell you how many times I've gone onto a forum looking for a piece of information, only to post helpful information for others simply because I happened to see their thread. This is just my opinion, but I don't mind going through additional threads looking for threads of personal interest, unlike some others. This is the advantage of the forum . . . wide exposure. If I see a question I know the answer to, or a subject I have strong opinions about, I'll drop in and post . . . even though it wasn't what I was looking for. Either way . . . that's my two cents. Oh . . . I guess I gave a dime here didn't I? Sorry, you know how long winded I am! -TR
CustardFD
I would be inclined to agree with TimeRider. There are too many forums for an average person to cover on a regular basis. Those with very high post counts probably have so because they have the time to post in all the forums and monitor them. Would it be possible to have a bar down the side of the screen with a list of the forums on it so that people would be encouraged to switch between them instead of having to go looking for a list? For the people that like frames and have high res. displays it could also display an active list of replied to subscribed posts as well, or something else useful. I am definately in favour of pruning the fourms down though - looking at the post counts. Doing a quick merge thingy in my head cut the list down to 12 forums from the existing 23 fourms, and that could probably be pruned some more. I guess thats worth more than two cents as well, but there you go. Speak to you all later, Dan.
twist
i agree there are a lot of forums, i lose things all the time :p but the board covers a tonne of topics so i don't think there is much anyone can do about that. i think the solution is for keldyn to stop moving everything and let me be Oh quit your whining Twist. Or i shall be forced to move you... *evil chuckle* :p
