Windows XP SP1 Alpha worth upgrading

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know what everyones gonna do when it comes out... i mean im happy with XP so why change something that i dont have a problem with...

But maybe you can convince me that the New SP1 version of windows will be improved and i need to get it!

BTW My question is will MS just release the updates? or will they release a ISO of the windows xp with all the fixes..... so basically its a brand new improved OS??

Thanks

When I install SP1 (and personally, I'll wait for the final SP) I'm actually going to use Microsoft's nifty SlipStream to re-install Windows XP *with* SP1 already included, instead of installing SP1 on top of Windows XP. Then you have "a brand new improved OS" instead of an older OS with a patch applied.

SP1 will be nice when it happens, though. Lots of nifty stuff.

SlipStream is having the patches applied to the innstall rather than upgrading files it applies the patch to the files before they are installed. In otherwods it replaces all the old files with new ones. This is what system administrators do to there networked drives with the install files on it so that they ahve an easier time updating all the computers on the network.

sounds kewl thanks

My network admins from what i learned do alot of ghost stuff

like they make a Image of a HD just the way they like it tweaked and everything then send it to pcs over the LAN to have a already set pc

pretty effective so far

Slipstreaming a product is when you apply the patch to the actual installation files, as in, instead of installing the old version then applying the patch, you'd be installing the product patched. That doesn't make much sense, mmk, I'll use an example then trying to be technologically articulate, lets say you had Windows 2000, everytime you install it, you'd have to install the OS, THEN install SP2 over it. Using the slipstream method, you're installing Win2k along with all the patched files, so you end up installing it patched. This basically results in a more stable experience and less crap inside the Windows directory and the temp directories. I've done this to my Win2k CD and Office XP cd, works great.

EDIT: Woah, everyone leaped on the question while I was typing it, lol.

I haven't read Keldyn's slipstreaming guide, it's probably good stuff, but another place to look for one is Bink's site, www.bink.nu

isn't that why microsoft has created dynamic update for? before installation as long as you're connected to the internet windows xp setup will download and install all patches and updates and apply them so that while its installing it'll do this for you. i don't believe there is a need to do it the old way like for windows 2000 anymore.

thats what i think dynamic update is about.

That would just make the install take longer, because each time you decide to reinstall you'll have to download files.

plus that only works on the upgrade version or have i been in the dark! You can't format and install from DOS and do the Dynamic Update can you? Cuz i'd rather that instead and have access to Windows Update to get all the patches.

i think if you order a CD they'll charge you (shipping prices) but you can download it for free from Windows Update. SPs are always free but this one makes me thing since it's gonna include Mira and Freestyle! MS giving that away for free? We'll see....
