VS.Net on Celeron 400Mhz and 256+32Mb Ram

Question

Hi there.

I have a Compaq Armada V300 laptop with a Celeron 400Mhz processor and 32 Mb of ram.

If I add 128 or 256 Mb or ram to the existing 32 Mb will it be able to run Windows 2000 Pro + Visual Studio.Net 2003?

I know VS.net 2003 requires a Pentium II 450, but if I have more ram will it compensate?

Windows 2000 would run ok cause it only requires a 133mhz Pentium CPU and 64MB of ram.. Even Windows Server would work, according to Microsoft's official requirements... but what about Visual Studio.net 2003? Or would Visual Studio.Net 2002 work but 2003 not?

Thank you in advance!

I doubt the setup will stop you from installing. At worst, your hard disk will swap out memory a lot while compiling.

I know it will install, I'd just like to know if it will work in an acceptable manner... that is, I don't want to wait 15 minutes for VS.net to open and 1 and a half minutes to open a Form in design view and another minute to view a button's click code... :(

It will work fine if you upgrade the memory. I've got a Dell laptop with similar specs (400MHz, 256MB RAM) and VS 2003 works just fine.

I installed VS.NET 2003 on a P3 800mhz EB (Not a slot processor and supports PC133), 384MB, 20 GB EIDE HD and it took forever, even if I only wanted to install VB.net, VC++!!! (about 1.5 hours), but after it's installed, it loads very fast because I didn't do a full installation. Good luck

Yeah, I know it takes forever to install... on my P3 1000 mhz with 512Mb Ram it takes a looong time to install... That does not trouble me, I just want to know about using it!

From what I've seen here I think it's Ok... I just want to be sure, cause I'm buying the ram just so I can run VS.Net 2003.

Thanks for your opinions!

without more RAM it's going to suck.

What do you mean?

What I meant was... If with +128 or +256 Mb of RAM Visual Studio runs ok, I'll buy the extra ram. If even with that extra ram it WON'T run ok, then I won't even bother because I would only be buying the RAM so I could use Visual Studio.net 2003...

Don't worry about it; it will run fine. On Windows 2000, even with 156, it would probably run acceptably. Since VS.NET is a .NET application, it will adjust itself to your RAM situation, like all .NET programs do.
