Fred Derf Veteran Posted September 14, 2004 Veteran Share Posted September 14, 2004 Li-Nux That is the functionally the same as "Line-Uks". I'm more of a Lin-ix guy myself but it's close enough to "Lin- Uks"

timmmay
there was an article on here and slashdot a few months back about this, aparently Linus Torvalds pronounces it linix (two short i sounds) so the majority of us are right :D

markwolfe Veteran Posted September 15, 2004 Veteran Share Posted September 15, 2004 there was an article on here and slashdot a few months back about this, aparently Linus Torvalds pronounces it linix (two short i sounds) so the majority of us are right :D Linus actually pronounces it all the different 'mainstream' ways now. Originally, since his name is pronounced "LEE-nus" in Finnish, he had a sound file that showed he pronounces it "LEE-nooks". However, I say "LIN-uks" (though, I used to say "LIE-nicks" before I heard the audio file, or talked to other Linux users) EDIT: Straight from the man.... http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/linus/english.au EDIT #2: The FAQ site I linked to says Linus speaks Swedish. And, according to Finland's official tourist information site, "The official languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish, the latter spoken as a mother tongue by about 6% of the people.", so I guess not everyone in Finland uses Finnish as their primary language.
