Nag
Just for fun, I installed IE3 on my XP with IE6 already in it. But then it has broken my IE6... :( My IE6 now is not executing any javascript at all... Page rendering is fine, and even CSS is working perfectly, just that javascript is not working at all. I tried updating my IE to the latest version, but doesn't help. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Manuroc
maybe the JVM?
Nag
have you tried re-installing IE6?Yes, I think I have.I downloaded the installation file, which told me that I already have the latest version. Then someone told me to use this command: ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /D:" It works. I went all kinds of installation proceduces, reboot, etc. But still, the Javascript doesn't work with the re-installed IE... :( maybe the JVM? Hmm... are you sure? I thought javascript and java are different?
damdim
A stupid question :) Have you checked that javascript is enabled? Java and javascript are different things...
Nag
A stupid question :) Have you checked that javascript is enabled? Java and javascript are different things... Yes, turned on. At one time I even enabled all kinds of javascript/active X/vbscript, set security/privacy level to the lowest, then opened a local file with simplest javascript... Nothing~ BTW I can't even use the "Find" (pressing F3) function of XP :(
damdim
Does this happen to all the accounts or just yours?
Nag
Does this happen to all the accounts or just yours? Yes... seems the problem is system-wide... And... WTF?!! After I logged out my newly created account and logged in back to my usual account, all my settings on firefox, even bookmarks, are all GONE!!!   What the h*** is going one with those browsers?! Okay, a reboot brings back those settings, so it's not an issue now... Sigh...
damdim
Try to repair Windows using the CD. What file did you download to install IE3? I tried to install it from here and it didn't let me. The only version that worked is a zip file from here that didn't need installation, only extraction. It didn't interfere to any of my settings

("If nothing goes wrong, don't change it; if some thing goes wrong, don't try to fix it." ) I guess the IE3 has changed some DLL file corresponding to scripting engine. Does anyone know what this file is? Can I just recover this DLL file from, uh, somewhere? Thanks again!
damdim
I extracted the zip and ran IE3. It didn't cause any problem to IE6. Where did you extract it? I don't think it makes any changes to the system. It might be a coincidence and something else has caused the problem
Nag
Hmm... not sure then. I worried about trojan too. But my firewall and virus scanner and TCPView (a program showing what connecting/listening ports you are having) seems to be fine... so I should be okay. Anyway... my IE screwed up already. :( How can I fix it with CD or i386? Thanks!
Nag
Another "interesting" thing is... this is the "About" box of my IE... The three lines... Version? Encryption? Product Identifier? All null...
bazcook
Fascinating. You've gone Japanese. I think. I suppose this only emphases that we shouldn't play with an OS that is inherently unstable and held together with duct tape to begin with - even for 'fun'. In regards to the javascript - I wonder if downloading, installing and setting up as the default in IE Options > Advanced the Sun Java product would help - http://www.java.com/en/lifestyle/ Disabling MS java from even trying... Nag
Fascinating. You've gone Japanese. I think. No, no, they are Chinese characters. That's alright because I am living in China. :)I suppose this only emphases that we shouldn't play with an OS that is inherently unstable and held together with duct tape to begin with - even for 'fun'. Exactly... and worse, since IE is so integrated with XP, when my IE got broken, other functions of XP got broken too... :(
damdim
I still recommend to repair windows. After all it can't get worse :) If you don't know how, read the following: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
