Dudlington
I just got an idea for a website: You would create a login, and tell it all the programs and their versions that you run on your computer. This would be your personal list. The website would then keep track of all the updates to those programs from a database or something. That way instead of having to check 30 different sites every now and then for Winamp, Nero, Getright, eDonkey etc... you just have to check one site. It could provide links to the updated program's sites or files, and it could have options to email you when any/all/specific apps are updated. Also, a lot of programs have that feature where it checks for a newer version on startup or when you specify. Perhaps the website could automatically do this (independent of the program) and that way people wouldn't have to be checking 100's (1000's, 10 000's?) of sites everyday to keep the database up to date - it could be done automatically. Of course not all programs have this, but it would also make it easier to have lesser known programs on the site, say DesktopWeather for example. If you knew the server and commands it uses to find out if there is a newer version of itself, you could enter this into a form on the website and the program would be automatically entered permanently to the site for anyone to use. This would of course have to be OKed by the developpers of the program, as I think the servers their programs connect to aren't generally public. Anyway, just an idea I thought of a few minutes ago. Let me know what you think, and if anyone wants to do this, get in contact with me :)

Dudlington
Yeah, I saw this this morning, but I didn't see anything about what I was talking about. Oh well. I'm gonna go check it out now.
john smith 1924 Veteran Posted April 9, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2002 thats a great idea - ignore the guy above. If you could pull the version codes of various programs then it would work a treat- perhaps stored in some kind of sql database. It would aslo be good to tell you not only of updates- but also if you format- and need to re-install -then youll know what programs youll need to install again. good luck with it! StimpyX
CNET Downloads already does something similar to this (though you need to install a little detection app from them): http://catchup.cnet.com/ But competition is a wonderful thing. ;)
MxxCon
cnet's catchup is defenatly good. however you are somewhat limited by their list of software. another aproach is http://www.watznew.com it's harder to setup (i couldn't figure it out;)) but seems to be more capable.
