grimman
buying 4 original copies of windows, two office suits and microsoft works (plus other lesser pieces of games and apps) adds up to quite a sum. i'm willing to bet that the software i own costs at least three times as much as my compy did when i bought it. i consider warez "the bonuslevel" of software. sure, i pay WHEN I CAN. qwaz, stop being such an ass... and PLEASE please please, **** off. i use photoshop frequently. i'm 18 and a student. i get by with the help of notepad, photoshop and psp (lesser piece of software ;)). now, remove photoshop from that line and you have a broke student with no means of earning money except for sitting at a local store (which is already stuffed with local kids) at a ****ty pay. i intend on buying a fullversion of photoshop, it's way worth it. but ppl you qwaz makes me so ****ing ****ed. Ash
And I can bet the images of that car are copyrighted, yet there's no problem having used it in his sig now is there? Point being most people don't really know copyright law completly, any image, sound, txt etc from any website are copyrighted, and unless specified as royalty free, freely usable or allowed to be copied, it is illegal to do so. It makes me chukle when people who call people theives and such for downloaing a program, yet they themselves aren't totally abiding by the law! I doubt there is anybody anywhere that hasn't broken copyright laws, many times over. Be it downloading images off the net which they were not expressly given permission to do so, got somebody to make em a copy of a tape/cd ( video or audio ), or whatnot. There is no difference between somebody downloading Photoshop or visiting a website and findnig a cool image and saving it, even if theres no things saying that you may download the image. unspec
There is also the tricky balancing act Adobe has to play. They know Photoshop is massively pirated (Asia is particularly bad for them in that respect). Being a "Pro" tool with a fairly steep learning curve, illegal use of PS by "wannabe" and learning artists is perversely good for Adobe. Exposing and locking potential customers into an application is a very real plus point. Now all the under 18's here that have PS, are they really "a lost customer"? Would they have spent ?500 on a single app? I think the answer to this is no, but aspiring gfx artists using PS and learning it's tricks really won't use anything else when they become professionals. Those people probably will buy PS. Just my thoughts on the matter. -- unspec

Botiemaster
Just because it's aimed at BIG companies or anybody with money, doesn't mean it's right to charge 600 bucks. I agree, most people you see around the web with photoshop probably got it for free a.k.a. warez. Us normal internet chatting folk WILL NOT pay 600 bucks for Mr.PhotoShop, unless there is money to be got from it's use, or you really really really think it's kool to have. Hell i've been leaning toward dropping the free graphic programs and buying PS but when it comes down to it, 600 bucks is a killer for a piece of software. I much rather spend that money on games or porn or a hooker..... I'll probably go for Uleads app. I've used the trial and it's nearly as good as PS and costs only 90 bucks or so. Some claim it's better. PS's trial sucks, can't even save your work :disappoin better to have had a 30 day trial time limit instead. But no, they limit you to no saving thus the attempt at pulling you in for a buy if you gotta save that awesome pic you made. :disappoin

xerog
>unspec, you're right. That situation actually happened to me. I was like using pirated **** and got hooked to QuarkExpress. Then I joined this publishing company which was still using Pagemaker 5 and when they asked me if an upgrade was required, I suggested they use Quark and they got it for me. Point is, if I hadnt used anything previously, I'd prolly still be using that near obsolete PM5, I wouldnt have recommended QEx and Quark wouldnt be getting that extra sale. Those folks shouldnt be bitchin' about losing millions ... a major part of that 'illegal users' wouldnt be able to afford their software in the first place. US$500 is like 10 times more than the average Joe in Asia earns a month. Yeah, asia's a real nice place to get *cough*software*cough*. *cough*WinXP Pro*cough* CD cost US$2. For the same price, you can also get the COMPLETE *cough*Adobe*cough* apps on a CD. Just wait a week or so after an official release of anything and pirated Cds of that same app will be out on the streets. I luuuuvvv Asia:D
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted April 12, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 12, 2002 alternative's to PS: PSP (i'm a BIG fan) The Gimp (still too buggy on windows though :p ) PhotoImpact odd side note: the PSP section of google is nearly twice the size of the Photoshop section... kinda makes you wonder... :D
unspec
Botiemaster: screenshot PS is excellent for gfx creation for screen and print. GIMP is lacking in the print department. -- unspec
