Longhorn, the next windows OS

Recommended Posts

I got this info off of an internet site produced by one of the engineers at Microsoft-pro( http://www.windowspro.dns2go.com/). His web site, was basically neautralized, except for the fact that the base files were still there(http://www.windowspro.dns2go.com/WindowsPRO/ )....I was originally sifting through the base-files for the .swf file that was posted on "Office NGO [new generation office]".....by which I did get too(and is currently SAVED on my comp, but was removed from http://www.windowspro.dns2go.com/WindowsPR...iceNGO-News.htm a few minutes after I downloaded it)......and I found these pictures(attached) and a site written by the employee......Which I belive is now offline. The site had these pictures(attatched) on it, and these words:

"Well if you have been wondering about this Longhorn release, and been thinking of it as the follow-up to Windows XP in the since that it would be Windows NT 5.2, well then you've got the right idea. This section, of course brought to us by the renown Paul Thurrott and his SuperSite (literally), is going to be about the next version of Windows code-named 'Longhorn.' This is the FAQ of the future version of Windows... set to release now in 2003.

Q: What is this 'Longhorn'?

A: Longhorn is the next version of Windows, or at least we think it is. Microsoft may indeed drop the term Windows here before to much longer. In any case Longhorn is the next Microsoft OS which will follow Windows XP. While it was once expected to be a fairly minor upgrade, Longhorn is now anticipated to include a number of new features including a revised task-based user interface, an extensible Start panel, and a SQL Server .NET-based file system. The Longhorn version number will probably be 5.2 (Windows 2000 was 5.0; while Windows XP is 5.1).

Q: How do we know this stuff is real? Wasn't the next version of Windows called 'Blackcomb'?

A: Well the existance of Longhorn was first revealed by Windows product manager Tom Laemmel, who Mr. Thurrott met July 17, 2001 during a press tour. Laemmel leaked the story to eWeek a few days later, and MS's executive vice president Jim Allchin confirmed that a new interim release, Longhorn, would ship before Blackcomb, which will be a major release. This may be where the 'Windows' package ends. Since that initial leak and then confirmation, information about Longhorn has appeared in Microsoft and Department of Justice (DOJ) legal filings related to the Microsoft antitrust case. Here at WindowsPRO we believe Paul Thurrott when he says, "It's Real."

Q: So when will this new Longhorn ship?

A: Microsoft originally said that we could expect Longhorn in late 2002 or early 2003, but now the release has been pushed back until late 2003 at the earliest. In other words, probably later on in early 2004. We may see Beta's come this fall. All of this suggests that an XP refresh, possibly called Windows XP Second Edition (XP2E) will ship first, in late 2002. This is NOT the same as the XP Service Pack.

Q: What's up with the name 'Longhorn'?

A: Well the name wasn't chosen randomly; go figure huh? Remember that Windows XP was code-named "Whistler" and the next major version of Windows is code-named Blackcomb. Both of these names come from ski areas in British Columbia, close to Microsoft's headquarters. I've been in the area and I can assure you it's quite nice. Bill picked the perfect names... In any case, at the foot of Whistler Mountain, there is a saloon named Longhorn that serves the local skiing population. So if you're ever in the area and want to take in some local color, Longhorn is a nice stop? after you're done with Whistler. Ironic how that works out huh?

Q: So what will be new and different in Longhorn?

A: Though much assumption on Longhorn continues, it's beginning to appear that this release is going to be a fairly interesting release with some major changes"

I just had to tell somebody about this.....I belive, like a true geek, that this is TIGHT.....Even if I do like mac:):)

Most of the users at this site are really up to date on this stuff. After all, this site started out as a place where people got beta info of Windows XP "whistler" and people were talking blackcomb and longhorn way back then.

I believe there are a lot of great enthusiastic and poineering mind people on this board. We all have parallel goal. We strive for perfection and to be the first. This is why NeoWin community is so strong. So many people in here believe in creation. So many gear towards newly born ideas and versatility of softwares. Neowinian, we have come a long way. I say let us wait for Longhorn! :)
