=NickJ=
OK ppl time for some clarification: Osiris: PC800 is RamBus memory (aka "RIMMs" or "RDRAM"), used with P4s with QDR (Quad-Data-Rate) buses, the number stands for 800Mhz. PC2100, PC2700, PC3000 are all DDR memory (Double-Data-Rate), used with AMD processors (and P4s with the right chipsets although to get any kind of performance out of a P4 you need RDRAM). The numbers this time stands for the Megabytes/sec transfer rate. JUST TO CONFUSE things further, DDR-RAM can also be written in Mhz speeds, however it usually has a prefix of "DDR" to make things clearer: DDR266 = PC2100, DDR333 = PC2700. HOWEVER (lol), those Mhz ratings (266 & 333), aren't the bus speed of the mobo/processor, because its DoubleDataRate, you have to halve it. Hence 266 = FSB of 133Mhz x2, 333 = FSB of 166Mhz x2. PC800 actually has a transfer rate of 3.2gig/sec (i think), when compared to PC2100, which is just under 2.1gig/sec.
altezza Veteran Posted April 15, 2002 Veteran Share Posted April 15, 2002 Thanks for clarification. It is clear to see why Rambus price still more expensive than DDR RAM these days...
Osiris
Thanks and heads up to Nick_Jones for the clarification. Doesnt seem so complex somehow just the acroynms.
superbeast
I hadn't suggested a Duron because here in Texas Athlons run only a few dollars more than a comparable Duron. PC2100 is cheap, and GeForce 2's are around the $60-$100 range (low end). You can pick up an excellent 19" monitor for around $220 (17" for $125). Hard drives $70+. I almost always pay too much for a case, but I've started ordering all my cases from overseas, so they cost about twice as much to ship... Anyway, a good AMD system can easily be built for under $1000.00. However, for speed and reliability vs. price, I still recommend a new iMac. Starting at $1,399. they can be financed and outperform any off the shelf PC at the same price.

X-Man
um...okay people, I kind of wanted a more simple answer. You've all put me to shame. :( I have nooooooooooo idea what any of you are going on about, but there seems to be a little bit of debating around what is best. Okay for those in Sydney, which is the best store to go to around Dulwhich Hill? So...um who should I listen to, who is the expert on this site? I heard a that Keldyn is the one to take adivce from, but he was rebutted, so who else can give me advice? P.S. Sydney kicks Adelaide arse:)

Keldyn
Fact of the matter mate is that personal opinon plays alot in this thread. I recommended a Duron based system because they are cheap yet more powerful than intels own budget offering, the celeron. You specified that you were looking for something affordable. A duron system with ddr would be a good bet. Geforce2 cards are very cheap right now, and ddr is less expensive than sdram. A system like that would definately do the job and is not overkill. Price vs performance its a good bet Choice is yours ultimately... Perhaps you should call around, get some quotes on prices ?
