Use for an old pc? YOU Decide!

Recommended Posts

I just wondered if any wise neowinian's or the just plain crazy ones [:alien: ] could suggest uses for my old pc - must be SOMETHING it could be useful for :)

Specs

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[EDIT] AMD 400Mhz [/EDIT]
64mb RAM
2.5gig hd
36.6 modem
1 8x CD-ROM,
1 8x/4x/24x CD-RW
:paranoid: ok so I'm a bit bored and have some time on my hands :ponder:
Do it as I did. Stick 2 nics (or more it depends) plug a cdrom and a HD and a vidcard (just for the installation). Download the IRcop iso and make the box a linux firewall/router
When everything is set up and running just unplug the cdrom and the vidcard, you dont need them. The manteinance is done via web interface. Very cool indeed. :D
personally i would drop in a 128 DIMM and a huge hard drive and turn it into a juke box runnning windows xp.
me and my roommates at college got an old P2 300, dropped in 128MB of ram, XP Home ed, 60GB harddrive, winamp and a video card that had tv out. it came with a nic so all we did was hook it up to the tv and now we can play hours of music for all our drunken parties!!
:) great suggestions thanks, anyone know some decent sites etc with tutorials about networking and linux ? Two area's i haven't really looked into before.
/me goes to explore Linux and might just look in that handy Linux & Macintosh Forum - thank god for neowin.net! :cool:
Thanks once again :)
screw firewalls theres no point, its not worth having it on 24/7 just for a home user..
either
A JUKEBOX or
spray black put under tele and u got a STANDALONE DIVX PLAYER
or just sell it to someone my bro still uses a p266 for cs and tfc with a voodoo2 and hes happy, a 400mhz will be good for someone new to computers i guess
check my sig... i run my old P133 @ 400MHz now. just got a new 20Gig and use it to serve up mp3's, a test machine (i design sites), storage and my wife uses it for word, email, surfing...
plenty of things you can do with it. and dont hang it out on the curb. dontate it if you can ! or sell it on ebay and make a few bucks.
-distributed.net or seti@home cruncher
-stereo via mp3s and shoutcast streams
-get tv out and make a divx player
-remove the heat sink and use it as a space heater :D
-file server (if you've got the cash for hard drives)
-small webserver
-router/firewall
-waterseal it and make a fishtank (get it to run and get double points :D )
-sell it for parts
psw: yeah it was a P150 but I got a Powerleap upgrade to AMD K6-III 400MHz - great minds and all that ;)
as for the jukebox idea's - hmm nice but i personally don't have a need for it - thanks anyway :)
timdorr.. waterseal it and make a fishtank - that has to be the best idea!
I remember seeing one or two articles in various PC Mags pop up now and then about that kinda thing! It would totally kick ass - I think I'll wait til SONY invent some robo-fishies to have a bit of consistency :p:D
:ponder: Doghouse...mmm.... - it's big enough!
~seems to be a wild life theme comming to light :s omg neowin is secretly run by GreenPeace - bunch of hippie soap dodgin tree huggin crap ;) [no offence :roll: i'm just kiddin]
