Well to be honest I think he was trying to ask a valid question here I dont think a poll was required, but alot of threads have been closed lately and he was probably just wondering why, some havent had reasons why they have been closed and the guy was probably just curious.

I mean theres a fine line between free speech as such and moderators limiting that speech, its usually a very good balance, and theres even comprimise as seen with the evolution vs creation thread that was closed and then reopened after people had time to cool and the moderators re thought it.

Granted its a two way street between members and moderators, but perhaps if a small explanation of why a thread is closed, rather then 'thread closed'' end of story. might avoid posts like this. I know moderators dont have to explain it, and most times its pretty obvious why but sometimes a lil explanation can save alot of confussion.

Why did TimeRider go and change all his posts in this thread to " :) "?

Because I'm a peace lovin' kind of guy. My question was answered by the BIG dog. I was told that my free world-democracy bit was not welcome here.

I don't want any problems . . . I understand and accept that free speech is a matter for cultural interpretation, and this is a cross cultural forum. If my posts are considered inflammatory, then I will retract them. I'm a guest here after all.

Yeah see thats why 90% of the threads are closed conflicting users, which leads to wide scale flaming, and before you know it a bush fire.

But thats the thing theres such a fine line, I mean the moderators cant have a thread of flaming and name calling, but if they close it the other memebers of the community loose the right to voice their opionion on the topic.

There needs to be like a thread banning option, so users flaming can be temporarily banned from replying to a thread.

Give em time too cool off as such.

There were definately some posts that were borderline, but none really went over the edge. I think that those that were getting a little hot had left and the thread had returned to a more stable state by the time it had closed.

I understand that the staff wants the threads to be opened in the appropriate venue. I respect that. I would also suggest that General Discussion is anything not covered in the Computer specific threads . . . including politics, religion and philosophy.

If the replies get out of hand and push the acceptability threshold, then the mods should warn those involved before they shut down a thread. Buit it is also unfair to close a thread because one person wants to be a spoiler and comes in trolling with the express purpose of closeing a thread. That person should be banned for a few days.

I guess I have a different view than some. . . when I see a thread about whether Chris Rock needs a prophylactic . . . I think that is a really silly subject. But I don't let it eat away at me, nor do I go in and make inflammatory remarks about whether I think the thread should exist. I just ignore it.

Hence, if someone doesn't like religion as a topic, then they should remain silent and let those who have a veiw address their views in peace. Coming in and making inflammatory remarks, or suggesting that the thread be closed because they don't happen to share an interest is not constructive.

TimeRider: The fact that you edited out your argument making all the mods and my replies in defence irrelevant is minor to the fact that you denied the rest of the community this thread.

You preach that this admin doesnt want to hear your free democracy and freedom bit yet you have turned the thread into senseless dribble because our answers dont mean jack with your edited:

:)

I think that alot of members need to understand that we dont appreciate the complaints and public outbursts from members directed at staff who try very hard to steer this community to an acceptable level for the majority.

Like I have said your actions just make it harder for us to moderate (ie: what this thread has turned into)

Wouldnt it be ironic if I closed this thread (I would be right if I did) but look at the title, then YOUR edited posts

So please do not come to me with your free world and democracy bit when you dont even take into account the powers we need to have to be able to moderate GENUINE trouble makers here.

Your open assault on this makes our work more difficult each day, so congratulations.

Did I misunderstand your message here? I thought that you were telling me very plainly that you didn't appreciate my comments. That your percieved them as open attacks. The last thing I wanted to do was start a flame fest on the moderators in this forum. So I removed the offending passages.

Actually, I thought the thread would slip off the page into obscurity, but that didn't happen. I am glad to see that no one here seems to be taking shots at the Mods as you had predicted.

After the thread kept getting bumped back up, I chose to answer a question about why I deleted the original posts. Now I find myself on the working end of another a**chewing for that. I can't win here since I've been damned either way.

All I was trying to do was be sensitive to the differences between our beliefs.

I am always hearing how Americans are so arrogant. Well here you have an American who simply wants to share ideas peacefully.

Lock the thread . . . delete it. I don't care. It's not that important.

Take Care Everyone . . .

and above all be safe.

I'm not sure what you mean by this . . .

But an arguement has never been my goal, nor my desire. I was just asking a question. As I had said the poll was intended to be tongue in cheek. For those who don't understand the euphamism, that means humorous.

It was never my intention to attack anyone. I have tried to delete the thread by deleting my first post, but apparently that is a task outside the scope of my abilities.

Neobonds first response left me feeling like I was outside the bounds of forum etiquette. So I deleted my remarks. I didn't see anything wrong with it at the time, and it was not my intent to exacerbate the situation.

You know . . . I come here . . . I try not to be a problem. I don't flame others and I try to make my replies as respectful as possible. I try to listen to what others say, and state my case as eloquently as I can. I freely admit when I am wrong, and apologize when appropriate.

I try always to be an example, an asset.

But this is so weird because no matter what I say . . .

Well I guess I'm just so doggone disappointed right now I should just go watch a movie.

Be careful people . . . feelings are a fragile thing. And we all have them.

Yup, and im locking this one now too. Steve, myself and a few other mods have tried being reasonable here. We have put forward explanations, now all it is , is senseless bickering. I dont think there is anything else that needs to be said here. Given that you have gone back and edited all your posts TimeRider shows us that you are interested in no ones opinions other than your own, and by doing so, have denied the rest of the community any real insight into what this thread was about and also a chance to contribute to it. It has since lost its original purpose and i dont see fit for it to continue.

Thread locked.
