Need an Idea on project

Question

Hi guys.

Well I'm a computer science student and there is this huge world wide contest coming up. There are many categories but the one I'm interested in is:

Application Development.

The top three projects in Canada get to go to Yokohama Japan. We get about six months to do the project.

Even if I don't get in the top three, to make a good impression is always good specially for my resume. Oh and ah, the contest is sponsored by Microsoft.

The idea I currently have, is to work on a new type of music compression file and obviously a player for that.

What do you think about this idea ? And please if you can give me any ideas it will be great. It doesn't matter how difficult it is. Good projects are not easy to do.

So shoot. Thanx guys.

have you looked at what the past winners submitted? If i remember they weren't very complex to code but were real usefull. MS likes it when you do networked stuff with their PDA's/Tablets... but i would do something with MS Mobile. I am sure there are a lot of usefull programs that need to be written.

I would not recommend this as a project type because you will not be able to create a new audio compression format in six months. It takes a lot of time. But furthermore, that is not relevant to the contest.

You need to keep in mind that this programming contest was created to promote the development using the .Net Framework and that Microsoft focuses on networking devices and finding innovative uses that is offered with .Net. There are a ton of rules you need to follow, including using a web service, having a smart component of your code, etc. Look over these criteria before you begin deciding on a topic.

Also, ignore the contests' first year entries as examples. It was a 'rush' job in planning and students only had 1-2 months to develop and application. So they are looking for more creative ideas and a better demonstration of the technology.

Talk with your school's Microsoft Student Ambassador for more great ideas and try to work with some friends on this contest.

The idea with the most novel way to use the .Net Framework to communicate between devices and offer unique services will win.

Good luck at the Imagine Cup 2005!

I would agree with KayMan2k on this issue, something like an audio codec is not in the scope of what the contest wants from you. Not to mention how insanely complex of an undertaking that would be. Check the guidelines first to see what type of things your program wil need to include, and then build an idea out from there. Consider developing an application that takes advantage of Media Center Edition or Tablet PC Edition. And above all, the question you should ask when deciding on your app is, 'Will this make people's lives easier buy using it?' Get some 2nd opinions on that (from both the layman and tech informed) and if the answer is yes, then go for it!
