go to the command prompt and type "tracert mail.yahoo.com" and see where it stops then you'll know if the problem is mail.yahoo.com or something along the way...

I am not sure how factual this is but here is the answer to all your qaundries:

Yahoo as of a certian date (will find out) will cease ALL FREE POP3 access and will begin charging for this sevice (######). They will charge $29.99 for the first yr and after that it increases. My dad has yahoo and they sent him and e-mail about it. I hate this stuff too. I hope this helps you all.

Yeah I was so ****ed when I got that email from Yahoo. I've had the same free email address since I signed up at Geocities long before they merged with Yahoo, and everything was perfect with POP access until I got notice of this. I got 2 emails about it but I guess I deleted them both. I believe they said if you sign up before April 24th(the day free POP access stops) then it will be $19.99 for the first year, otherwise, $29.99... screw that either way. About a week ago I ran a little search and found a free POP account at SoftHome.net that so far has been great. If yahoo is your primary email and you can't stand doing email through a browser like me you might want to check it out, or pay the biatches.

Regarding the original question:

Sometimes Yahoo mail will blank out on some ISP's. I believe it may be a DNS issue or somethign of that sort and is usually corrected in two hours or so.

About Yahoo mail in the browser:

What's so bad about it?
