Young Mother Smothers Baby Son

A 21-year-old mother accused of smothering her baby boy to death at Brisbane's Mater hospital faced court today.

The woman sat with her long hair hiding her face throughout the brief hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

Police have seized hospital surveillance footage that allegedly shows the woman smothering the eight-month-old baby in the early hours of yesterday.

Police said the infant was admitted to the hospital on September 27 suffering injuries consistent with having been physically abused.

"The cause of the infant's illness was not known but there was a suspicion that it may have been caused through human intervention," a Queensland police spokesman said.

The baby has been treated at the hospital since then, being placed on a monitoring regime that initially involved direct monitoring by hospital staff in the intensive care unit. At other times the child was monitored electronically.

At 11.30pm on Wednesday the baby was found to be suffering an hypoxic episode and was resuscitated by medical staff.

An hour later the baby suffered another episode but could not be revived. It is understood surveillance cameras in the room allegedly captured the mother holding a pillow over her baby's face.

Authorities were unable to confirm whether the mother was allowed into the room with her child or whether she entered without permission.

The Mater Hospital and Queensland Health refused to make any comment.

The mother was taken to the Brisbane Watchhouse last night.

Her baby was not in the care of the Department of Child Safety at the time of his death. She was not a hospital inpatient at the time of the baby's death.
