Life on this planet... where from?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I was just thinking. Where do you think we came from?

If you think about it this way, we're extremely lucky to be here. It was this planet's perfect distance from the sun, perfect temperature, perfect conditions, that spawned the first bacteria, which evolved and evolved into us. We're a pretty amazing species. We have a conscience, which helps raise questions like "what's the meaning of life" and "where are we from?" We have become amazing tools of creation.

I find myself questionning the odds of all this happening. I think we are EXTREMELY lucky to have evolved this far and become what we are. What do you guys think?

I've heard some people even think that maybe aliens dropped us off on this planet to colonize it or something... I'd be interested in hearing what you guys think.

... you guys been having probs with these before? I just think it's a really neat topic to discuss... but if u had plenty of these before or they turned into flame-fests then u can remove this...

Where have you been? The Evolution/Creationism threads have been causing all kinds of strife here. Flamewars a plenty. We close them down, people start new ones. I think some people around here just are not mature enough yet to handle adult conversations on topics such as this without turning everything into an argument.

All i ask is that you keep this one clean...or it gets shut down.

Ack -- Luck has nothing to do with it. Evolution is so "perfect" because its a product of the environment. Everything that doesnt work here - didnt - and thats why, at this location, we is the way we is. There is now other way for us to be, at the moment. Now the fun part of all this ;) , other locations may have equally evolved [or further] life. But because its specific to another environment, we may not even be aware of its existence and possibly, not even able to comprehend it. Cool eh?:alien:

hmm, actually - luck does have a little to with it, as far as the random mutation that increases fitness. Evolution is really really cool. I opted to stay out of the other threads cuz they werent really discussing the idea - rather it was ol' "tired debate".

Now here is a fun question: "What" is the unit of selection? [what is the process of selection acting on .. i.e. - DNA, organism, population, etc..]

:lick:

lol, yeah, i am sure this guy really wanted a good discussion too

All I can say is DNA is the one selfish molecule that does whatever it takes to replicate itself, why? who knows, how it got started? who knows.

It might seem to you that it can't be a coincidence having such perfect conditions.

Now comes the hard thing to understand, tho it's a simple assertion, most people don't seem to be able to understand it:

If it would be different, you wouldn't be here and able to discuss it.

It's a damn hazard which allowed life to develop. If that hazard would have caused different conditions, there would be no humans and you wouldn't ask it in this forum which wouldn't exist.

Same goes for the whole universe. "Oooohhh, all constants are so perfectly tuned, it can't be a hazard".

Same thing again, if it would be different, you wouldn't be here and able to discuss it.

Finally, someone with a clue! :D

I happen to think the explination in the Rama book series works quite well for me. (good book series by the way, HIGHLY reccommended). Basically, God exists as a being outside of our universe. Basically, his goal is to create our universe so that it is perfect, aka peace on.....universe! :D He just fiddles with variables during the big bang until he gets it right. I think it makes much more sense that if there exists a god that created us, we're probably his little experiment more than general will. Not to say that he doesn't care about us, just that things didn't go poof and we're all here all of the sudden...

what gets me about such topics is none here have the years of scientific knowlegde to give the big bang or eveulution proper discusion. thus we simplify both and then some people attack the simplified concept of both.

people never amaze me!

hehe transformers, flaming threads indisguise.........

ahh well some intresting points raised by tom anyway, but who can say, is it too simple to go with the easy answer?

or are we looking into it too much to find the complex answer?

who can say.

I know what you mean. Many of them are also going by the cartoon version of Evolution put out by Creationist groups like ICR to mislead them. There was even a person on here who ask the stupid question of how an animals knows what to evolve to and where are all of the failed attempts. :)
