I personally am sick of hearing that MS is a monopoly and abuses their power when other companies are monopolies and do likewise. Frankly, I believe that AOL is a monopoly. I am not sure if they leverage their power with OEM's, but not only would it not surprise me, I would expect this to be the case.

The AOL/Timewarner group itself IS a monopoly... BUT I think they are trying to mislead ppl into thinking they are not by leaving their companies' trademarks alone (ie. not calling winamp as aol winamp but as nullsoft winamp), unlike other companies do. They are not big brother, even tho they are really close to being like that...

AOL Time Warner is a basically made up of a bunch of crooks. There practices are border-line illegal yet they are the first ones to try and expose others. Recently AOL did it to Microsoft and Time Warner Cable did it to Cablevision.

AOL complains that Microsoft bundles IE with their product, yet AOL is going to bundle Netscape with their product. Time Warner Cable complains that Cablevision doesn't carry the YES Network as a standard channel yet Time Warner Cable rased rates so that it would carry the YES Network. Give me a break.

When it all boils down, no one cares. Do you really care that Internet Explorer is build into Windows XP? Computer software barely works as it is now, could you imagine if we had 100s of different browsers downloaded daily? I don't care who makes what software or what is bundled with what, as long as it works and works well. Too bad politicians don't look at the background effects instead of quickly indicting people and companies so that their own corruptness isn't exposed.

Turn on CSPAN for 2 minutes and just watch the smiles on those Senators faces. I guarentee you'll be crying from laughing so hard.

k, this is totally gay... how is aol time warner a monopoly of the www?

ITS NOT. that is just what people that wish they could be aoltw say. hrmmm, ie microsoft. there are many isps that are out there. i have said this before and will say it again. it is not like the ONLY isp on the face of the earth is AOL. it is not like we are forcing people to use it. but, if it was the only isp, you cant tell me that you would not use it.

it is not aols problem that everyone uses aim... it is not aols fault they made a product people want to put in their homes and use.

calling it a monopoly is the most retarded thing i have heard in a long time.

to put it simple... like them or hate them... they are here to stay. get over it. you dont like them, your fault but they are doing nothing to infringe on the www like ms did to pc.

period

edit... more rant.

it is not like you hear of aol execs on the stand in the supreme court trying to get them to not split the company in half.

if the merger that made aoltw was deemed a monopoly, it would have NEVER happened.

it took over a year for the merger to even get approved. i guess since it did get approved, it wasnt a monopoly huh?

*deep breath*

im done for now...

i hope i shed some lite in on your dim minds that have no idea what a monopoly even is.

one more thing... ever see the definition?

mo?nop?o?ly Pronunciation Key (m-np-l)

n. pl. mo?nop?o?lExclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or servicece: ?Monopoly frequently... arises from government support or from collusive agreements among individuals? (Milton Friedman).

Law. A right granted by a government giving exclusive control over a specified commercial activity to a single party.

A company or group having exclusive control over a commercial activity.

A commodity or service so controlled.

Exclusive possession or control: arrogantly claims to have a monopoly on the truth.

Something that is exclusively possessed or controlled: showed that scientific achievement is not a male monopoly.

I think you can say they have a monopoly in some places but not all. Here there are quite a few ISP/Content Providers and they do compete, but AOL certainly aren't the biggest (Freeserve is here in dialup and BT in broadband).

Don't forget the question: it isnt do you not like AOL (which is the thing that pops into my mind when I hear their name in almost any context!!).

No there not a monopoly, there is no such thing as a monopoly

even MS isnt an monopoly is actually an oligopoly since there is more then one Operating System out there.

And yeah I know what your going to say but they have the market share so there a monoopoly well in economic terms they arent, the only real monopolies actually left in the world are probably the post services and Water services, well thats whats monopoly in australia.

Becauser you see a monopoly is where consumers only have one choice of a product, whilst they may not have a big choice there is more then just Windows out there, thus in conclusion the definitions given from an economic point of view conclude that based on those examples and situations, TimeWarner and AOL no matter how much they would like to be, is not and probably never will be a monopoly.
