Our Canadian anthem was booo by American fans

I am surprised that the Mods haen't closed it.  I asked earlier if it was simply trolling . . .  no names were called, no judgements made.  I got flamed for that.

What seems to have followed is 3 pages of unremitting hostility.

Whatever happened to the arguement that "This is a tech site?"

What possible benefit does this thread have.  Could someone please explain to me what redeeming quality this thread has, that would allow the senseless arguements of a few people who obviously have nothing in their heart but hate for America, to continue unchecked.

If you Canadians hate Americans so bad . . . why do you buy our cars, drink our soft drinks, use our software, watch our movies . . . I could go on ad infinitum.  I haven't heard any gripes about FoMoCo putting manufacturing facilities in Canada . . . why is that?

American children are taught that America is number 1.  Is there anybody out there that would tell me that Canada teaches their children that Canada is number 2 . . . or 3 . . . or just somewhere in the top 50?  I don't think so.

Please close this thread . . . it's nothing but a flame war and it has served no purpose that I can see.

I have traveled quite a bit in Canada.  I have found most people there to be very friendly.  But there are a few that clearly hate America and Americans . . . but they're always willing to take our money . . .

Go Figure.

As was said before, it's the perception that Americans are taught that they are #1 of 1. Most other countries at least acknowledge their neighbours enough to learn a little about the other country. I have personally had problems with conversations with some Americans, not all obviously. It's better indicated by the Q & A sessions some talk shows do when they ask Americans in the street questions about other nations and these people prove that they are idiots.

That's because only an idiot would allow himself or herself to be interviewed on a talk show . . . street or otherwise.

Please tell me you're not basing your entire view of America on what you've seen on TV . . . if that's the case then you're as short sighted as you claim we are.

So it's only the hockey, basketball and street people who are ignorant of other countries? What do you base your view on? How many sitcoms take a shot at Canada for no reason? This just perpetuates the stereotypes Americans seem to believe are true. If you think that this is not the case, please leave your idiot tourists at home and send the informed Americans for a visit.

I think the main difference between our countries in this area is the fact that we aren't taught who is number 1, 2 or 3. I learned all about America, Europe, Canada and the rest of the world in school... and not once was I taught which one was number 1.

In fact, I learned quite a bit about the States and how they were our friendly neighbors to the South. I learned all about your Civil War, your slavery, your States, your past Presidents, your laws, etc... I'm wondering if theres a Canadian History required content in your public school system? Let me know if there is and how encompasing it is.

Sure Canadians have their pride about their country, we just don't take it to the extreme and force it down the throats of others.

This is just saddening. :( :( :(

Why in the hell do you all argue over a damn hockey game??? Those people who booed the Canadian nat'l anthem is indeed "the scum of the earth," and IMO should have been banned from that facility indefinately. Same goes to Canadians.

The alliance between the USA and Canada is the best in the world, as the border between the USA and Canada is the longest unguarded border in the world. The accident with the F-16 was an accident. It was an ignorant decision on the pilot's part. I wished that my fellow Americans would realize that Canada is the best friend that the USA has, and that the USA is not necessarily #1 in everything.

Please, folks, get along, and stop flaming each other.

My 2 cents.

i agree with you.

being #1? what does that mean? it all depends on how you look at it. if u talking bout best place to live.... norway was ranked first, australia second and canada third after 8 years consecutively first. if u talking bout making the most money per person of a country... hong kong was ranked first.... all depends on how u look at it. (ranking done by UN for '02)

i'd totally agree with grafXguru that we are not taught who is #1 but rather to keep our minds open.. always.

The proper thing to do would to have saluted the fans with the Trudeau salute and then turn about and walk out. Be a sin to pay money for a game and then see none.............

I think Canadian people want America to pay more attention and give more respect for what they have done... I guess that we should not mix sports with this issue... I can understand the Canadian what they are going through tho... I just like to say to Canada that when it comes to sport, you can't mix it with politics... but I guess the world is changing... so I am blabbing here...

Either way you look at it, people are people. You have imbeciles who scoff and mock and disrespect other cultures and nations. That will always be a constant in any country you go. I don't condone what the people did at a sporting event, by which should not be the grounds for an international flaming session. There are more important things to worry about then to focus in on a collective of petty individuals who probably were intoxicated to begin with.

To use the "my country is better then yours" arguement is just plain juvenile and pointless.

So far I have lived in 7 countries throughout Europe, and North America. Each country I have lived in has its fair share of problems and social issues. However one remaining constant, is always dissatisfaction towards their respective governments, tax rates and social problems. It's amazing how all country, the US included have the same problems and issues (varying scales), but yet everyone likes to point fingers at everyone else for problems, and also isolate themselves from other nations problems with the false facade of bliss.

There are individuals in the US that fear change and do not educate themselves properly on various world topics. However they are eager to talk a lot about them, which tend to display their ignorance and inability to research.

There are also people in Canada who are the same way. The open-mindedness does seem a little more prevalent in Canada.

So you see, no country is better then the next country. Just because one country has a larger Grape producing industry, or another country has a larger military, it doesn't mean that the military makes a country the greatest. It's the heart and character of its citizens that make up the country.

I've been all over the US, Canada and Mexico and there are wonderful places to see and always interesting people to visit or talk with. While I lived in Canada (Quebec City, PQ), I ran into a lot of "solidarity and separatists attitudes", similar to the Bloc Quebecois Party and various other small groups wanting to cede from Canada to form their own sovereignty. I had always heard second hand versions of their ideals, but I finally got to hear first hand what they stand for and their goals. I don't necessarily agree with all of them, but that's their "droit? After living in both Montreal and Toronto, it is amazing to see differences in lifestyles, attitudes and over all atmosphere of each city. I am fortunate to communicate in both of Canada's National languages, which enabled me to travel easily throughout the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and drive across Canada to Vancouver. I have to say it is a very diverse country, and I enjoyed living there.

The US is also a diverse country, consisting of lots of interesting people and climates. Since it is a "world power" it is always going to be in the spotlight. Everything the US does will be scrutinized and studied by the rest of the world. However complacency has been a long suffering weakness of the US. People got into the attitude that the US is the strongest country both via the military and economy. Up until last fall, the majority of Americans were only concerned with themselves and their personal lives. It is ironic how many American flags went up after the events of last fall. It makes me mad to see how many people jumped on the "patriotic bandwagon" and yet these same individuals scoffed at people who displayed an American flag on their car prior to September 11th. Most people figured they were either "rednecks" or "militia". The point of displaying the American flag on a car 3 or 4 times is obnoxious. I'm not saying that patriotism is wrong; I just am disgusted by the bandwagoneers. Anyone who lives in the states can vouch for this. You're driving down the freeway and you see a brand new car, with an 8x11 American flag sticker on each door, one on the front window, a flag hanging from the rear view mirror and usually the bumper is covered in the Red White and Blue.

Since I have a dual citizenship with Switzerland and the US, I sometimes hang a Swiss flag off my mirror, and I cannot believe the times I have been given the bird, flipped off, yelled obscenities because I don't have my car plastered with the American Flag. I get a lot of crap for not displaying an American flag at all. I unfortunately see the sudden spurt in patriotism a "trend" that will pass over and then you'll see a whole lot of Americans trying to peel off 10 Flag stickers off their new cars, cursing at themselves why they went overboard to begin with. It's this mentality that is sometimes displayed to the rest of the world.

Bottom-line is, don't desecrate another person's culture or national anthem. Respect each other and take the old golden rule into affect. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Just because Patriotism is the "in" thing right now, doesn't give anyone the right to boo another country's anthem. Maybe next time they should play "O Canada" in both languages to confuse the intoxicated morons.:D:D

How many people are missing the real reason behind the booing. The National Anthem was only being booed because it was for the opposing, visiting team. Is it wrong? Yeah it is but you people are getting out of hand. Mentioning the accidental bombing and how either country sucks, get over it. It was fans supporting their team in the wrong way, that's all!

I could never hate the country that spawned hockey, John Candy(RIP), most of the SCTV alumni in fact.  :p

John Candy WAS canada's greatest comedian without a doubt...lol, everyone says jim carrey was, but jims not canadian anymore remember? lol, he sold out his nation of origin for his multi-million dollar home, n i heard john stayed in canada most of his life...

i love sctv lol, that show is a classic, heard rumors of it coming back to tv, but like thats gonna happen, it'dd rule tho, having dave and bob mckenzie, some of canada's finest actors, they could get one of the kids in the hall guys 2 b on it also since john candy's dead n they're pretty funny lol.

Sorry ... out of a crowd of 18,500 less than a hundred or so booed the US anthem. Enough to be heard, but not like what happened in Detroit. Classless and boorish ... but I do take iss with " ... the Vancouver fans." It was a few louts and that's it. And, the same jerks didn't respect the moment of silence so the hell with them! But, don't label the Vancouver fans based on that ...

hmm for some reason through out the whole season i don't remember this happening.

and if you want a good example of americans walking all over other countries as they see fit.

usa womens hockey team, walked right across the canadian flag before the final game.

now THAT is disrespect!

so don't act like this crap is new. you've been doing it for a long time as a country in general. why the hell do you think YOU always have this **** ass little wars to fight. your foriegn policy is a huge joke and people are getting sick of it. and now your paying the price, i don't care how you justify all this crap, there is no justification for this stuff you've been pulling for decades as soon as you step outside your borders. any non-american will probably agree with me.

ameriKKKa must be destroyed :p

and for the record, i have nothing against any particular americans, so don't start. but as a country in general you really need to open your eyes and realize that all the military might you may have means nothing and does not make you right.
