Making a Personal Statement

Recommended Posts

I'm in Year 11 (Secondary/High School), and have been asked to make a Personal Statement. Thing is, it should have been in a few weeks ago, so I don't have any resources (e.g. booklets etc. showing me how to go about creating one). Can anyone help?! Perhaps there's some help on the Internet? (Google didn't come up with any example documents). Or maybe someone has some sheets or a booklet that they could scan in for me? It'd be really helpful! Thank You!

mr magoo: for none uk people a personal statement is piece about your self you put on your "ucas" form. this is a form which you send off to universities that you wish to apply to; they use the personal statment and other factors to get an idea of you. i have to make one in about 6 months... suppose were in the same year mateo!

Yours should be, "Personal statements are pointless. Once this class is over, I will throw this away. I will never look at it or think of it ever again. I despise busywork. I will strive to fight those who dispense it."

I hated having to do this at school, you need to sell yourself, and thats a really really hard thing to do.

Try to work out all of your good points, and right them down.

All the things you like to do, and why you like to do them. Sport is always a good one, means your a team player.

Anything that shows managment skills, technical skills, a desire to learn, social skills, basically anything which is good!

Basically rattle out some crap like "I consider myself a team player, partly due to my sporting passtimes (list em). I find leading a team of people to be an enjoyable challange' blablablabla.

Just dont make it complete transparant sh*te ;)

I guess you dont have them over there.

It is a paragraph at the bottom of a CV, which you use to sell yourself, describe your personality, hobbies, goals, etc.

its a useless bit of dribble that should not be on resumes, or Cvs, its useless and I hate people who even have, Future Goals, there the biigest load of crap ever, employers get to that part in the resume and ya see a smirk or little laugh come over there faces, because its just bullcrap. You sell yourself with facts in the other sections of the resume, not in a useless irrelevant paragraph at the bottom or start of ya resume.

lol well that may be true, I've never recruited people, so dont know, but the fact is, you get taught to use them at English Schools.

A slightly useless reply Osiris.

No a slighty useless reply is what yours was, when youve done a course in 'employment roles' thus recruiting basically you can come and talk to me again. You just run along and go do everything your school taught you okay, funnly enough what schools teach and what employers want are two different things mate.

The lad is at school, not looking for a job.

Did I say I do it? No. I said that is what a personal statement *is*, and that is exactly what his school will expect from him.

You seem to have a serious bug up your *ss..

If you've nothing helpfull to say, dont post.

It must be a cold day in hell today, because its gonna be one the day you get the right to tell me when to post on here mate. Now look why dont you go run back to your english school and leave the forums for people who are still in touch with modern schooling and descent forum courtesy.

Hmmm, about 2 or 3 serious replies and the rest is kinda offtopic...

Come on, help this kid and don't argue if it is useless or not... It's an assignment from school, remember?

(And sorry, I can't help you.. Just got annoyed at this argue about if it's usefull on resumes or not)

So telling him what a personal statement is, and giving an example, is irrelevent? Nice logic.

Your post was like someone saying "Please explain differentiation, I have a Maths assigment that I cant do!", and replying "Maths is crap, its not needed in the real world.".

Nuff said I think.

I was supposed to do a Personal Statement and all that rubbish... it's not important. Plus, when you can ride a unicycle like I can, then you don't NEED to put anything else in! :p

Hey I might have slandered them but at least he knows what there used for a how useful they are. Hes got his answer know and hes a moderator so he can close this thread if he wants, because its been answered.

As for you Jon really what do you expect when you go around saying

Hrmmm Thanks for the useless post, dont post in future?

do you really expect people to say "Your right Job, thanks for pointing that out mate, your posts are spot on all the time man thanks"

lol I mean really are you english that stuck up you actually think people are like that, not likely, If you critise someone especially someone who uses neowin quite frequently and who is well respected in other parts of the forums, do you really expect a pleasent response, are you really that concieted to think that?

I still don't understand what a Personal Statement is.

Maybe because I have no clue what a CV is. It's sounding like what we did in my English class--College Application Essays?

CV - curiculum vetai (my latin was ****e) its a summary of your achievments- or lack there of in some peoples cases...!
