Making a Personal Statement

Recommended Posts

A CV is a academic/employment history really, a list of your education and qualifications, and previous employment.

The personal statement is pretty much redudant as Osiris says, but it is still taught at school (secondary school here = 11 -> 16yrs).

woah woah chill ppl dont go slagging off brits! you two just picked fights from each others posts, just drop it and get back to helping him.

king mustard, what jon said on the first page 5 posts down sums up a personal statement pretty well, you just gotta note everything you've ever done or been good at, say you're good at learning new skills, pick up things fast blah blah blah

I still don't understand what a Personal Statement is.

Maybe because I have no clue what a CV is.  It's sounding like what we did in my English class--College Application Essays?

CV stands for Curriculum Vitae, sums up your life on a couple of sheets of paper basically, what you call a "Resum?"

Ahh...Thank you:))

That shouldn't be difficult to throw together at all...

I actually work in Human Resources and get to sort through Resum?s on a regular basis. Some things people write down scare me...

We don't need to know you're single and enjoy long candlelit dinners and walks on the beach if you're applying for a Case Management position...seriously.

This thread is a bit odd.....

I wrote a personal statement when applying to colleges. It's usually 1 page (250words).

As the majority mentioned you are trying to sell yourself. Being a high school student you should rely on the following:

+honor/awards

+extracurricular activities

+unique hobby/talent

+unique life.

Basically you need to write an essay about why you want to attend the college as well as why both of you would be a great match.

Writing one of those bad boys can be quite difficult, just because you have to write something real, something different, something that only you can tell.....

and everybody has something to say, and most of the times, it's difficult to put it in writing...

The title of mine was

"caught in the crossfire of two religions"

Here are the DOs and DON'Ts

In Writing Your Personal Statement, DO

Write about yourself, not about legal philosophy or theory

Stress your strengths without being obnoxious

Deal with your weaknesses without being defensive

Talk about activities, work, or life experiences you are proud of

Be confident, but not arrogant

Keep it brief

Check carefully for grammatical errors and misspelled words

Treat your personal statement as your chance to sell yourself

Think of the personal statement as a substitute for an interview

In Writing Your Personal Statement, DON'T

Do all the stuff warned against above, i.e.,

Write about generalities rather than about yourself

Be obnoxious, defensive, or arrogant

Be verbose

Allow mistakes to get into your final product

Whine, plead or be cynical

Sound like a thesaurus in an effort to impress

Assume that your statement won't be read; it will be

on a side note... CVs and Resumes are different, but most poeple when asked for a CV, the employer usually wants a resume.. i know it's a bit confusing.. but the you'll ge the hang of it.

a resume should be about 1page (2max) summary of /eduation/work xp/etc.. (it depends on your life stage and job)

cvs are geared more towards academia.. usually run a few pages long

but since most of the ppl here are either HS/college students then CV is pretty much a resume..
