i keep mine on all the time......because actually it can do more harm turned off than turned on. I learned this the hard way.

I went out of town for "3" days....so i figured i would shut my computer off...when i got back it wouldn't boot up....hard drive issues....happened to me twice......you think i would have learned the first time....

but i was like most of you, in thinking that if i turned it off it would be better for the computer.......Wrong!

and you know what's really funny, is the drive that died would not work, as i tried so many times to get it to boot.......and then one day it worked.....and i still use it to this day......mind you i back my stuff up a whole lot more now........hehe

I leave my desktop computer on all the time. Its amazing, there's times when it goes a whole month without having to be turned off. But I'm just like Freeza where I have to reboot a lot after installing things and stuff like that. One reason why I keep my computer on all the time is because I run applications in the background that use idle cpu processing time. Since its going to a good cause why not run something like that in the background when the computer is doing nothing. Plus when only the computer is running and not the monitor or anything else like that it really doesn't take that much energy to run it. Plus I guess it helps when energy is free for me at the moment. I'm a little bit nicer to my new laptop I guess you could say. I try not to do the same thing with it because of the heat issues. Running the CPU on that at 100% results in its fans running really high all the time.

well i have 2 desktop machines networked using ics , so the ics server machine is on 24/7 ( i make sure i have stuff to download :D ) while my other gets turned off of a night.

( a little tip from my personal experience is make sure ur cpu fan isnt encased in dust like mine was , it stopped the fan spining completely , good job it was only a amd 400 k6-3 and didnt overheat like athlons do etc .... i think it took me about a week to realise why the machine was locking up randomly :o )

Since I installed XP I leave it on, before that (with win 98 or ME) it would crash before I ever got to the 12 hour mark (and if I got that far I considered myself lucky LOL)... so I couldn't just leave it.

People who say it's best to leave it on and the ones that say it's better to turn it off both have pretty good arguments supporting their reason...

I just find the sound of the fan kinda comforting ;)

I turn mine off every time I'm not using it coz

(a) Electricity isn't free where I live.

(b) Heat, heat, heat. My router, cable modem and system heat the room up pretty fast.. and air conditioning isn't cheap either ( see point a )...

same as locke, I only keep it on if im downloading stuff off kazaa or Im defragging. Other than that I try to remember to turn it off. but I have it set to turn on at 07:00, well before I wake up, so when I do wake up and get online I dont have to wait for it to boot up.

Turn on the computer on Sunday mornings where I do maintanance work to it, download, rebbot etc. And leave on all week until Saturday night where I turn it off, I run a drug design program so I just left it running. In addition, I usually work on my computer a various times so it helps.
