I usually leave it on but maybe once or twice a week I'll shut it down when I go to bed. My computers' over two years old and starting to show its age so thats when I usually do my rendering.

I would, but we have alot of storms and stuff like that here, and I don't want a power surge to ruin my computer.

Also, IMHO i think turn it off and back on increases performance.

Its not good to keep the computer on for a long time, plus it makes your energy bill go UP UP UP. If you have no use for it...turn it off! Keeping the computer on all the time means the components will probably have less of a lifetime

I don't think thats true. The most stress that computer components endure is during the power on/off cycle.

BTW - When your monitor is off or on stand by, a regular PC uses about as much electricity as a light bulb. So I say, leave the computer on, turn the monitor off.

i cant sleep without the glow of the monitor with ghrone clock all big and winamp alarm clock set to wake me up. I have no clock in my room so i just look at the screen (the clock is at 200%) and the humming of the fan.

i cant stand waiting 1-2mins before the computer starts up, especilaly with this stupid thing on XP that takes 4hrs for it to detect network connections so that i can connect to the internet... so i keep it on unless i install some new software...

now that im moving the PC to my room i intend on turning it off some nights, or i might order a new fan that doesnt make as much noise

No with a quaification. I leave it on all weekend from the time I get home from work on Friday until the time I go to work on Monday. I turn it on when I get home on weeknights and it runs until I leave for work the next day.

I've been running the Seti@home program since early February. I finally installed XP successfully in late February.

I know what you mean. I see all these mods for making your computer quieter. I acutally find the hum of 6 case fans soothing!

  • 2 weeks later...

i leave my pc on all the time, the only thing that ever shuts down on it is the HDs, i don't pay the electric bill so im not really worrying about that too much ;x

its also nice to listen to some relaxing music from mp3s rather than a stereo, in my own opinion

I only leave it on when I'm downloading something big. Sux only having 56K.

Otherwise it's off. Not really much point in leaving it on, it would just be sitting there doing nothing.

Nope, I actually see no point in leaving it on. Save the power and money. Oh and, turning your computer on and off doesn't stress the parts anymore than leaving it on.

I leave mine on 24/7. Only time it gets turned off is to

clean the fan filters, install hardware, dusting etc.....

After getting a sweet deal on a UPS650 at best buy (1/2 price if you can belive that!), It never gets turned off.

I use to keep in on 24/7 in the winter, but in spring would shut it off if there was a chance of a thunderstorm in the area, but now I just leave it on. I have the monitor, tower and DSL modem (I still don't like the term modem) plugged into the battery backup, and everything else plugged into the no battery part of the UPS. I have worked on office machines for 20 years......fax machines unless hit by lightning would run for YEARS.....unless the power went out, then the sudden "surge" of voltage & current would kill the power supply. I look at it this way......most of the time, what burns out a light bulb?

It just running? or when you flip the switch and apply power? That sudden jolt of juice can sometimes do the same thing to the power supply in the computer. Of course we ALL have backup computer power supplies

sitting on the shelf, don't we? ;)
