Cable boxes

Recommended Posts

Time Warner Cable came to my house on May 2 @ 9:00 am to hook up the new Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 set-top box and let me tell you this thing rocks. I can pause, rewind and fast foward live tv on any channel I choose. It has a built in 40 GB hard drive that can store approx. 50 hours of digital picture and digital quality sound. There's one thing this sucker does that Tivo doesn't do. I recorded The Green Mile off of Showtime and I played it back through my receiver and I found out this. It recorded this movie with the DD 5.1 audio and played it back in DD5.1 audio. I can record to live programs at once while watching another live tv channel at the same time. It's got it's own picture in picture which lets me record one channel, watch a recorded movie in the big windows and watch a live tv program in the PIP window. I can switch the PIP windows to the main window and vice versa. It's very very cool.

Go to www.scientificatlanta.com and view the demo they have there. I also have HBO OnDemand which is pretty cool too.

What's even more cool is the stuff that's yet to come.

B4H, those cheap SOBs gave me a dinky little SA Explorer 2000. Nothing more than a cable box. It's unstable to boot. Crashes all the time. I finally had them cut off my cable TV and kept the cable internet. I was kinda hoping they wouldn't block all signals but the cable internet channel, but they did. Oh well. .

I sounded pretty stupid there. I meant I can pause live tv and I can rewind as far back as it has recorded. The recorded show I can do all those things with. I was just so excited about it that I just overlooked that point. Good job in pointing that out. You have an attention to detail. That's always good to have. I'm pretty sure you know what I really meant.

That's what I had before was the explorer 2000 boxes and they suck the big one compared to the 8000 boxes. The crazy thing is this. They cost 1 dollar more per box per month. Let's see Tivo will be out of business soon if everybody can get these.

Box and service with TWC = 7.95 per month per box.

Tivo =

Hardware = 300 to 500 dollars one time fee.

Software service = 13.00 per month.

with tivo I have to have a seperate box and use a tele to download the program guide information which takes on average 30 minutes to an hour a day.

It's just a pain in the butt to use all of these devices.

Now I just go into my program guide in my cable box and search for my program and then highlight my program and press select and select the option to record this program. Whala it's done.

Tivo will not get my business because of this simple reason. If have an easier and cheaper alternative I will use it and the Explorer 8000 boxes don't get much easier than that. nuff said.
