The 1st computer I used was an Apple IIe back in 1984. It was ok for what I did. Next I learned AutoCAD on a TI Professional (LOVELY computer...had a perfect feel to it). I used a Unix-based machine for a couple of years and learned Unix fairly well (and since forgot it). Been back with M$ for years and I guess I'm happy with it. I'd love to try a Mac for a while and maybe learn to use Linux.

I love learning computer stuff.

What about Mac & Windows are we debating?

Are we being asked which operating system is more stable? If so then I'll have to say OS X from personal experience. OS 9 & Windows XP are problematic for the same reasons; Both OSes are the result of addon code after addon code after addon code. Throwing more code onto an existing OS makes it less stable. Which is why OS X is the victor in this category... it was written from scratch.

Or are we talking about the features? Which OS has better features and built-in apps than the other. I'd have to say that OS X wins again. Not to say that Windows XP doesn't have lots of built-in software, but just that the programs included with OS X are more powerful. iMovie for example has way better features and tools than Windows Movie Maker. Also, in my experience, Windows Movie Maker crashes A LOT. iTunes wins over Windows Media Player for one major reason; The ability to rip in MP3 format. I do not have a use for WMA files especially when they try to aquire a license over the net before they allow you to play them. MP3 is far more supported than WMA so that's what makes it better for me.

Or was it that you were asking us which OS is more mainstream than the other? Which is more wide spread, Mac or Windows? Windows wins by a long shot here. Microsoft made a powerful move to have their OS marketed with almost 100% of all the PCs sold on the consumer market today. Because of that almost everybody who owns a PC uses Windows by default. Only those who intentionally go out and by Linux or FreeBSD use other OSes and who's to say they don't still use Windows? Also, the very fact that you need to buy a new computer to start using Mac OS X makes it unpopular with those who simply want to use a PC without having to be conserned with the details. Working at CompUSA I've seen so many people who need a new computer "stop by" the Mac department to check it out. It's only then do they even consider a Mac. So if you ask what OS is more used, Windows wins sitting down.

Could it have been conserning software? Were you trying to figure out which OS has a better software selection? The answer to this one could easily be influenced by opinion, but I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. There is more software out right now for Windows than there is for Mac. The reason being is mainly because of the situation described in the above paragraph. Now as for the Mac, there is more software for it now than there ever has been. Mac OS X has created a surge of new software titles for the Mac (10,000 titles from over 100 companies were released or under development at OS X's launch) and that has raised attention from those who pass up a Mac because of the lack of titles availible for it. Still, Windows machines have a greater software selection than a mac does. This includes games, which is the decision maker for millions of gamers. If you want a better game selection, get a PC. The Mac has a growing game selection (Especially for OS X) but it's still much smaller than the PC's selection. However... The software already availible on a Mac can arguably be considered "the essentials". Meaning that a PC may have more to choose from, but a Mac already has all the important titles. Personally, I agree with this. But it's still up to the individual as to what's important or not. Digital Editing, Business, Utilities, Audio Editing, Education, Entertainment, and Internet all have very powerful titles availible for the Mac and more importantly OS X. Everything one needs is already there, but it might not be exactly what you want. Windows wins with a greater selection with Mac in a close second already having the most important tools and slowly filling the gaps.

You know what? I think I know what you meant when you said "Which is better?". you wanted to know what I prefer over the other. :D

Personally, Mac OS X. I hold stability and ease of use over all and Mac wins both times. I don't have a problem with lack of software because everything I need Mac already has. I like the hardware and software Apple makes and I think that it's a better breed of computer.

Sorry about the essay, I was bored :p

First, does anyone think the poll is biased?

After all, the people it's polling are all members of a site called

NEOWIN

Second, argue technical, software or useability all day long and it will get you nowhere; it's all about cool factor!

A new top of the line iMac is pretty damn cool. "Hey, I can burn DVD's on my white lamp post!" That's cool. The new dual 1ghz G4 systems with 23" widepanel monitors are freaking cool...but then again so are oc'd dual Athlon XP running a GeForce4 on dual flat panels (SWEET!)...

So my question is, do you have a cool Mac or a cool PC? If not, sit down OEM boy!

I think you are either going to think

a. PCs are cool

b. Macs are cool

c. Both are cool

and it usually turns out from the millions of Mac vs. Pc threads before this:

(# of a.)=(# of b.)=(#of c.)

And if that equation doesn't ring true then there is always a fighter on the weaker side who will argue to his death. BTW my answer is "c.".

I don't really know Macs, the last time I used one was about 2 years ago.. it was a first-generation iMac.. MacOS 9 (I believe) 233 MHz G3 and 32 MB RAM. That thing wasn't half bad.. ran photoshop faster than the P3 500 MHz, 128 MB RAM with Win98 I had at the time.

what i find kind of funny is how people have an opinion when they've only used one of the other. i wonder how many windows bashers or osx bashers have actually given the other a fair try...

i really like Mac OS X and Windows XP equally, they both look really good and function really well, although i've only used mac osx in school and windows since 3.1. The only thing that Windows beats the mac os on is that windows had more aplications, more things are programmed for windows...not everything is developed for mac// with mac in mind :

I like mac and windows 50/50. I would love to get a mac but there a little too expensive compared to windows based systems. But if the price drops anytime soon I buy macs just as much as I do a windows based pc. To put it simply I have no preference between a mac and windows. I just get what's the cheapest at the current time I want to buy. Just to clarrify this. I not cheap and when I say cheapest I mean more for my money cheap and right now I can get more for my money with a windows based pc than a mac. Apple I hope your listening to this. I'm saying to you Apple I would buy one of your computer if you can give me more for my money than what a windows based pc can. But I love macs so don't get that wrong. I have one iMac and my Sony desktop and a compaq laptop @ 266Mhz running Windows 2000 (XP is too slow on this machine but will run) and am looking to buy a Gateway or a Compaq Pentium 4 notebook as my part Birthday/Christmas present to my self. I also just bought an AMD Athlon XP 1600+ desktop with an Intel Anypoint wireless Gateway which I'm going to use when I get my notebook. Just need to buy a 120.00 PC Card from Intel and I'm ready to go.

QNX!!!!!

::snickers::

Actually, I find Windows (2k) to be more stable in a server enviroment and the Mac more stable in a workstation enviroment, especially in the case of graphics.

Which do I like more? Neither. Both.

Roast pork or beef? What about sizzling lobster tails? ::licks lips::

For speed OS9 is king, OSx is still sluggish in comparison and only with the forthcoming 10.2 release should this become evened out - at least for those with the right hardware (Comparing the 9.2.2 and 10.1.4 on my g4/400). OSx is very very very stable tho (I'm sure OSx server is the same) and beats XP out in that respect, but only just. 6 months of using XP, and I'm very impressed, tho XP is saved somewhat by stylesXP. I could certainly use XP for work, and would like to see how well it stood up to the kind of punishment the mac goes through. I would like to see something like Apple's Coloursync implemented into XP. The problem for us print ppl switching is print bureaux almost exclusively use macs, and it's a pain remembering to save everything down in binary format.

I've got a G4/400, iMac 233 (the missus' machine) and 8100/80 at home, work on G4/466, and play on a self-built Athlon 1.2 (@133x10) with GF4 ti 4400. Everything is networked up (only a 10mbit hub tho :( ) and any computer can use the router for net access, tho the PC has an ISDN card (better pings with the card :D).
