Pyro
well im one of the lazyiest ppl in the world and i have gotten an assignment that im not to sure how to do, well at least some of the questions and i was wondering if anyone of the neowin math wizes can help me out ? heres what the worksheet looks like, hope you can help. Thanx.
Prof. Frink
umm...why are the answers at the bottom?
Pyro
because the math teacher wants us to write the let statements and figure out the qudratic functions like y=a(x+h)2+k. so that the answer matches the one on bottom.

pumkinut
Well, way back when, I actually had to do my homework myself. It seems as if you should too.
astrokat
I failed pre-calc twice ... lol ... just answer "true" to all of them.
Pyro
but when you dont understand it's kinda hard to do it.
Pyro
hmm well if by the end of the day i cant do anythign i guess i will just answer True to all of em. :s
kawai
So easy, looks like kiddie calculus to me. (max/min problems) Being an UberCal student with a 97 in that class, let me give you some general hints (it's so easy, even AOLers could do it!) find a connection between two equation, that's the hardest step, taking F'(x) should be easy for most of them. Take the F'(x) of the equation, make it F'(x)=0 and solve for x you should have vale that goes like + 0 - for max problems and - 0 + for min problems. if you don't know any cal. you are gonna do this the hard way by using algebra, but I never had it this way, can't help you with that
aem4162
Calculus goes WAYYYYYY over my head and it scares me. I must go hide now. :( anita
Pyro
i figured out the first one... Let X = First # Let 60 - X = Seccond # (X)(60 - X) -(X? + 60x) C= 60 2 C= 30? C= 900 -(X? + 60x + 900 - 900) -(X? + 60x + 900) + 900 -(X + 30) + 900 This is a MAXIMUM and the 2 numbers are (30 , 30) Hope that will get some ppl to try and help me figure out the rest. I don't think you're supposed to use the quadratic formula for MAX/MIN questions, because you have no way of knowing if your answeres are really Maximums. A Maximum occurs when the second derivative < 0, and a min occurs when it is > 0. Here's how I learned to do it: Let the 1st # = X Let the 2nd # = Y Given: X + Y = 60 and XY = MAX therefore: Y = 60 - X so XY becomes X(60 - X) =60X ? X? then take the derivitive dy = 60 - 2X dx 2X = 60 X = 30 2nd Derivative: d?Y = - 2 dx? which is negative for all X values (as there is no X) so you know you have a Max. To find Y: Y = 60 - 30 = 30 The two numbers are 30 and 30.
Pyro
well... -(X + 30) + 900 the reason why i know that thats a max is because... -(X + 30) + 900 / the minus tell me its a max if it was + it would be a min. and if you wanted to knwo what the max or min was you look at this number -(X + 30)***+ 900 *** so that makes this equation -(X + 30) + 900 a max of +900. Pyro
forgot to add when we did some excamples she showed us using this way so im only thinking we should do it this way.
Dudlington
Yeah, better do it the way you were taught. I never learned that way though.
Pyro
cool hrmm the seccond one is confusing because of this part "the sum of their square is a minimum"
Deryck
Those are sooo easy.:right:In addition, I usually did my homework on my own at home, so that you would know how to do it and how to carry it out.
Pyro
we just started doing this so im not understanding thats hwy i thought i would ask for some help.
tmeg
I like math, the calculations I did where quite easy for me (ok, I am a university student, so it should be easy for me :smart: Here are the solutions I found: 1: 30; 30 2: 14; 14 3: 50; 50 4: 17777.77 m 6: a: t=1.5; h=11.025 b: t=3 c: h=7.056 I don't have the time to do the rest, I just wanted to check, if I am still capable solving some math ;) Edit: OK. Sorry, I made a mistake on 4. And I didn't see the solutions... :D That's why one should allways read twice and check the results...
Pyro
huh ? heh are those the answers cause the answers are at the bottom the the sheet if you want em what i need to do it the work to show that i know how to do it.
tmeg
If you want to have a look at my bad ;) writing skills: http://www.cs.uni-magdeburg.de/~klukas/tod...elete/math2.jpg Edit: I didn't knew you need the way how to solve it... If I knew that I would have made the calculations more clear and complete. (check the result, check if the solution is a maximum or a minumum etc.)

Thats probably smart. Doing it any other way than what you learned would more than likely make her suspicious that you're cheating. Especially if you're having difficulty with it to begin with.
