I was thinking about this and I think that Microsoft's eventual move might be to do away with IE altogether and simply say that web browsing is now handeled by the OS and not by a third product. It makes sence to me... I could be browsing some files on my computer and simplay type in an address, this does not seem like a third product is doing the work. I don't know if any of you noticed, but Internet Explorer no longer shows a splash screen on startup... The program does not make it really apparent that you are using a third program. If microsoft removed all indicators of IE, then it could be difficult to tell when you are in IE and when you are not. Now all of a sudden there would be an operating system whose shell could display pictures in various ways, files in various ways and web content in various ways. It sounds like a great all in one solution if you ask me.

As for Mac OS X. Apple has announced that it will be shipping all of the computers with all the ithings that you want. the new iMacs come with iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto, iDVD, etc... all pre-installed. However, it is also true that these programs are more segragated from the OS. Simply dragging the application icon to the trash does get rid of the application.

Take a look at the apple OS X web site... especially the section about OS X codename Jaguar (possible OS X 10.2). This version of OS X comes with iChat, a program which allows you to chat on AOL networks without having to use an AOL client! I can imagine that AOL is going to love the lost profits in advertizing. I think that the most impressive part of this new OS is that it will channel all of the drawing of the GUI through the 3D accellerator using OpenGL. I think that this method will have huge effects on the way the OS looks and should remove a lot of lagging (especially with the genie effect). The downside of this process is that owners of the iMac 2001 and earlier will be out of luck since thier video card dosent support OpenGL all that well...

That's just what I think.

It helps if you remember that MS is a monopoly. This changes a lot of things.

Being a monopoly isn't illegal at all, however the rules you have to obey _do_ change when you become a monopoly.

AOL could release a OS with a non-removable browser of their own. Nothing wrong with that....because AOL isn't a Monopoly in the OS market. I could have my own UnspecOS and tell OEM?s that they can?t use any other OS if they choose to buy from me. Again, this is fine because I don?t have a monopoly in the OS market.

Besides, MS has already be found to be a monopoly and also guilty of illegal practices. Argument is over.

It?s time to see if they actually get punished or if they just get a slap on the wrist.

BTW I have to say I really prefer Mozilla (on the Mac and PC) however it?s IE only at work here.

BTW2 I have never wanted a Windows based laptop as much as I want a ;)werBook ;)

Go on, I'll wait...............

... can't do it? Oh right, that would be where the term monopoly comes in then

Microsoft says, i can! all i gotta do, is go to ADD/REMOVE programs and uncheck the box in Windows XP!

::plays stupid, but that only gets rid of the icons:: WOW! ;)

Exactly.

And like Unspec said, MS has already be found to be a monopoly and also guilty of illegal practices.

Argument... is... over...

It's just a question on the severity of the punishment.

I worked through my lunch break - that's dedication!

Phoned lawyer, phoning Dabs, and fixed a really obscure printer problem that a department was having (I'm rather pleased about getting that one), as well as getting loads of physics kits ready.

Oh and we replaced the power chip on the scanner - but before we plugged the thing in, we checked the AAAC adapter.

It was putting out 24V instead of 16V....wonder why it fried :ponder:

So, what's for tea?
