Dysphoria
OK the California Transportation Comittee is Proposing a bill for building a High Speed Rail, connecting Northern and Southern California. A trip from San Francisco to L.A. will take only 2:30. Right now driving from San Francisco to L.A. takes 6~7 hours, if you are driving 80 miles/hour and if there is no traffic. Taking a plane to L.A.takes about 2hours plus 30min security checking on both Airports. The Train will move at 200~220 miles/hour. The project will cost $7 billion from the Cal budged and $7 billion from the federal budged. I think is an excelent way to travel without going through all the traffic and airport hassling. Would you guys support this bill?

The other alternatives of solving the Traffic problem in California, is to expand the highways and the Airports wich eventually will come to a same cost in 20 years or so, and there is also a limmit of how much you can expand the high ways. The Rail System is going to be build more inland and will be designed as Earthquake-prove.
autodefe
Heh I already get to LA from SF in :) But yeah I support this totally...
bayrider
i dont see why they shouldnt? ive heard of people who fly daily to LA from SF to work and come back... as long as its earthquake proof, costs are reasonable... why not? france has one... Actually , France, Germany and Japan already have this train. And New York, Florida and texas will be probably the next states to propose the same bill. It sounds excelent to me because now you can live in Santa Monica and work in Silicon Valley :) Or you can go for a day to San Diego, have fun, swim and come back the same day :) I thinkn that this is great investment not only for us but for the future generations too. shockz
I guess it would be ok. If i ever went on a vacation to california then that would be good. I hate all that traffic on the freeways.
persianpsycho
This would be an awsome project, seeing as how i frequently go to Los Angeles. My question is, if all goes well and they begin construction, when will we be able to use it, and how much will it cost to use?

My question is, if all goes well and they begin construction, when will we be able to use it, and how much will it cost to use? Well if the bill gets voted, the construction will start somewhere on 2003 and the initial line from San Francisco to L.A will be done by 2010. The full line, from Sacramento to S.F. and Oaklan, down to San Diego will be done by 2020 latest. The first class express train tickets will be 70% of the Air plane tickets price. so if the Airplane ticket is $100.00 the Train ticket will be $70.00. the price also dipends on the distance you are traveling. I think is a good deal, considering the money and time you'll spend just driving there in your car.
Snowhawk
it wont happen, I am still waiting for the rail from LA to Vegas, but thats been in talks for almost 5 years now, instead, cal trans is wasting money moving k-rails back and forth in the mid divider on the I-15, forget the rail from la to san fran, just save up 40 bux and buy gas in kettleman city or something on I-5 :) but say this bill does pass, if you live in southern california, then you know about earthquakes and trains. I live up in the high desert and the last major earthquake we had, the train derailed and the whole thing was a mess, but like opio said, with I-5, you could go from San Fran to LA in 5 h :)

The High Speed Rail plan has actually been researching and talking about since 1996 and finally after six years they are trying to take some steps towards realising the plan. Can you imagine what is the traffic going to be like in 20 years, with the current growth of population in California and in United States? I doubt you'll be able to drive down to LA in 5 hours, form S.F. the High Speed train is not going to use the regular and already existing rails. they'll be using totaly different rails, which are way more stable and able to withstand frequencies and force of the Train when traveling at 220 miles per hour. For the earthquake wories, isnt Japan a great prove that High Speed Rails can exist. Japan had more earthquakes than LA ever had and will have, and still the Hihg Speed Rail in Japan has been working efficiently since the 1960s. If you ask me personally I think that when it comes to public transportation US is way behind the other Economicly developed countries.
Tarik
Here's a few word for u all, i lived in southern cali, and trust me by the way things seem and what you are saying about this bill, i could say it will never happen, the U.S. talks alot the difference beetween Japan and Europe Vs. U.S. is that they want it, do it, and get it done, as soon as possible, i would not be suprised if this never happens, by that time, we wont need to worrie bout traffic, flying cars will probably be out by the time they lay there first brick on that dang railroad, cali talks alot, i mean look at there underground rail stations, they cost millions, and took years and years to build, and there is still so much traffic, trust me man, vancouver B.C. has an excellent transit system ( to me ) and its much better than anywhere i have seen in the U.S. there is to much to worrie about if u do it, especially in Cali, it would be nice to get from S.F. to S.D. in hours but persoanally i dont think it will happen, and if it does, it won't anytime soon. Thats my opinion u dont like it...:dead: This post has been brought to you by Neowin.net User... -[ x p e x p e r t ]-

I say better start building it now than later. We are already way behind the other countries on this one.
dARKSTAr
I think it's a great idea and i would certainly support it. Also, thousands of people use the metro link everyday, i even used it for awhile. It's a nice stress free way to travel. The difference between the rail line to vegas and the rail line to the bay area is one of practicality. The rail line to vegas really only interested the people of LV since a huge percentage of the people who go to vegas are from california. But whenever there were polls about a rail line to vegas, many just didn't support the line if it involved their tax dollars. Many believed that before there should be a line to LV, there should be one to the bay area instead. I support a rail line to LV and the bay area, but only if there is one to No Cal first. One thing to remember, the air corridor from SF/Oak to LA is one of the busiest in the world. Air flights between the two are getting longer and longer because of the amount of air traffic. Anything to ease the crush, even if it's only a little, is better than nothing. I know that unless i needed to be in Frisco right away, i would go high speed rail in a heartbeat. fr33k
if they use large express trains that carry cars then it's a good idea except I think it would be a little better if it ran the whole coast from San Diego California to Seattle Washington with stops at major cities along they way

Montreal is world renouned for having one of the best transit systems in the world... i mean, i had to drive 20mins just to get to the closest sky train station... here i can walk 3mins and get to a "metro" which has about 4 - 5 lines and the busses come approx every 5mins.... i dunno just my $0.

For for the initial rail the fundings come only from the government, until they have a solid prove of the yearly revenue, then they'll be able to get private investments and expend the rail system all around US.
