Stop Messenger From Running When Outlook Express Is Opened

Question

Here's the 100% working solution for those of you who are annoyed by it.

To stop Messenger from running when you start Outlook Express, first make sure that you have auto-logon turned off at OE tools, options, general tab. Also, make sure that your Contact Pane is turned off.

Now go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOutlook Express

Add a New, DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2. (This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the Contacts pane enabled)

I hate MSN... using the browser to log in to hotmail account call up MSN too... if you try to exit or force it to quit, it will not unless you close the browser completely... that's screw up...

Thanks besiboyz for that lil registry

rename msmsgs.exe to msmsgs.off in C:Program FilesMessenger

DON'T rename folder or use registry settings as this screws up Outlook, Outlook Express, as it will wait for a response from Messenger after executing msmsgs.exe!

This is for the people that cant get the registry way to work. There is a download that kills the startup of Msn messenger unexpectedly; like with outlook. U can enable or disable. When disabled, it will not pop up in outlook, or hotmail, etc. When enabled you can sign in. But it has to be enabled to sign in. It is called Messenger Killer. Go here if anyone wants it.

this was a very useful tip for me..not only did it disable messenger, but it fixed the lag when loading outlook and/or hotmail...

XP Tweak : Hotmail & Outlook Speed Fix

Thanks to Max for this tweak which fixes the issue of Hotmail or Outlook being slow after Disabling or Removing Messenger.

This Tweak will prevent Messenger from loading when you access your account via the Hotmail web page, it will also prevent the delay when Messenger has been removed or disabled.

Go to Start --> Run and type regedit

Navigate to the Registry Key below.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Messenger.MsgrObject.

Right click on the Messenger.MsgrObject key and select rename.

Rename it to Messenger.MsgrObjectold
