What to do in case of Earthquakes...

Recommended Posts

Heh, most of you, if read headlines, etc, will know that there has been an earthquake here in Taiwan (where I am because of biz). The quake was rated at 6.2 and occured at 11:46 A.M.

At the time of the quake, I was on the 9th floor, everything became shaky as hell, I actually saw the whole place moving from side to side. I grabbed my cell, my wallet, and keys and was about to bust outside, but then I realized...

what the hell, if it really gets bad, it don't matter whether I move or not, I would be a dead meat before I could get anywhere. Luckily, I am still here :) and everything is fine.

So now comes the biggie question, what to do in case of quakes if you are on high floors? Obviously, I wasn't about to jump out the damn window, that would've been a quicker road to death from where I was standing. (oh, and I considered getting a parachute... hehe)

Well, let the ideas flow!

I would run down the stairway at warp 9.5 and eventually run out the front door to watch the building collapse. :rambo:

Hiding under a table wouldn't be effective since the building might collapse and he has no way to survive that.

Stand in the doorframe of the nearest doorway. If you notice on buildings that "don't quite make it", the doorframes are largely the most identifiable remaining section of a building.

*survivor of a 7.8 earthquake in Japan several years ago*

Bend over and kiss your @$$ goodbye!:) :D

j/k goto the nearest door way and stand in it. The door frame is the one of the strongest structures in the building.

Taiwan is the most earthquake capital in South East Asia....

Makes me worry each time I hear Earthquake news in Taiwan....because my brother is studying there, but Thank The Lord that he's alright.

I live in San Jose CA and we had a 5.2 the other night. It's the biggest we've had since the 1989 7.2 that rocked the Bay Area killing 267 people and causing billions in damage.

I was fortunate enough to be in Pac Bell park at the SF Giants game when it happened. Boy! Was that a ride!

For preparedness, you should have a minimum of 3 days water and canned food per person, flashlight with spare batteries, and a set of hand tools (especially a crescent wrench for turning off the gas). If you live in a cold climate, you should also have some type of thermal blanket.

These should be reviewed every six monthe and the food and water cycled out. Have a SPAM party!

IMPORTANT! Don't keep this kit in your garage or house. You may not be able to get to them!

That wasn't meant to be a serious suggestion... you never seen those 50's info films about the three minute warning that tell people to hide under tables...

Oh hell. Just put a paper bag on your head! :D

Funny you should say, cuz that's where I am from too. Hehe, and what is more coicidental is that I just got off the phone from talking to a family member back in SJ about the 5.2 earthquake. And it was maybe 3 seconds after I put the phone down, the damn earthquake started.

Yah, I guess we are all taugh to get under door frames. But I don't know, I have my doubts. I was thinking if the quake is so bad, the whole thing would just crumble down and smash the crap outta me. (I dunno, I keep getting the Twin Tower collapsing image in my mind...)

I do like the "beam me up Scotty" idea though... :D
