I think maybe it was an AOL newbie using a port scanner. You just happen to be the lucky guy. :paranoid:

Are you using a program like LockDown or BlackIce?

Just curious as to how u knew.

There. That says it.

Lose them. Everything they have on their "Customized" content is available on the internet. Note that most of the time you go somewhere, they open a browser window (b@st@rdized and castrated Internet Explorer) and go to the internet.

The AOL software is also very intrusive to your operating system replacing system files that will never be replaced without reloading your OS.

There are many ISPs out there that are cheaper, especially if you pay by the year.

Well, they likely were running a port scanner, saw that the default port for FTP was open, and tried logging in anonymously. If they didn't get in that way, then obviously you have anonymous logins disabled (smart-move, depending on what you're hosting on your server). I'd keep an eye on things, but you probably don't have much to worry about.

You could always change the port from which your FTP site resides. This way, they would have to scan 1000's of ports to find your FTP. It's safer than having it sit on port 21.

But as long as you keep your security patches up to date, you shouldn't have a problem. I have my passwords set to expire monthly. This helps in case of brute force attacking.

Are you running a web server on this box as well?

Rofl, I think MxxCon is the only person here who got it right. Nine times out of 10 when somebody is trying to "log into your ftp !~!@!~!" it's because they typed in the wrong ip, or clicked a link to an ftp site using your (current) dns name (which is a lot more common with dialup than cable connections).

Seriously, if I'm a hacker, and I want to gain access to a system, I'm not going to port scan a bunch of worthless <56k's so I can store my porn and warez there to distribute to my buddies. I'm going to either 1. Look for a company with a ph@7 l33t T1+ pipe or 2. Hit someone with cable/adsl (the subnets 24.x.x.x and 68.x.x.x come to mind...).

Notice also that port scanners don't trip logins to ftps - they just check the status of the port.

not only that, but Norton Internet Security will report the ip of a person trying to break into your computer or send you a virus. if i didn't have a firewall/router i would buy it.

Do u use AOL? Do you have cable? Do you make unlawfull copy's of AOL's disk? ;)

In some area's AOL provide's Broadband (dsl or cable service) I have heard of broadband ISP's running port scan's on there client's computers, (see if your still on, see if you hacked there modem, maybe find out what site's you go to so they can bombard you with pop ups)

Just a thought, or maybe it was a cleaver trick.
