Advantage of dvd-ram over dvd-+rw (DVD recorder)

Recommended Posts

Pink Floyd    15

hello all.

I play to buy a dvd recorder very soon to replace VCR at home

So far, I head that dvd-ram has the capability of deleting only a part of the dvd, which dvd-rw or +rw can't (you have to erase the entire dvd)

the ony im looking for

Panasonic

DMR-E55P.jpg

the timeslip seems to be a very nice feature that not all dvd recorders have

do you guys have any other alternative or infos to share?

thanks

i'm not sure about the 'deleting a part of it', but i think dvd-ram is used in most players cos you can re-write to it unlimited times. dvd-rw and dvd+rw have limits to the number of times you can erase and write.

It's a smart choice of a recorder. 32x dubbing from HDD to DVD-RAM is a sexy feature to have and the free TV Guide service is another benefit.

yeah bangbang, I've just watched dogeball with my wife and recorded it for trying.

the only thing I dislike is the fact that my tc cable comes from digital box and tv guide doesnt work

it wouldnt work also with satellite

besides that, I love the way it shows the stuff you have recorded on HDD. When you highlight a movie or tv show, it shows you

a preview in thumbernail

yeah, it's really optimized for a direct connection but almost no one allows a direct digital cable connection to a TV/set like this. I'm glad you enjoy it, though. Have you tried the chasing playback feature yet?

I see you live in montreal, and talking about cable so that must be Videotron digital Tv you're talking about.

For 800$ CAN you could have bought their HD recorder which has similar specs IIRC and you would have the integrated guide in it and 100% of all your digital cable features compatibility.

Little late now, but you can indeed delete single shows from DVD+RW and/or DVD-RW records. I do it all the time on my Sony unit. DVD-RW in VR even gives you A-B delete mode, in addition to deleting full records without a format.

Explorer 8000. Works well, but has a few bugs in it. TV Guide only show 2 days at most, if you want to see more than 2 days, the unit say : Data not available. The HD does make noise that can be irritating sometime.

All in all, I would prefer to have a choice. Buy something that I like and be able to record my Digital Cable on it. This is getting crazy all the diffrent standard, Cable, Digital Cable, Satelite, .... The feed should be the same comming from anykind of box...

Well since I already have the standard illico (digital tv receiver for those who dont know what is it), I didnt want to buy the HDD terminal

I also wanted the option to burn a movie to a dvd and the HDD illico doesnt have DVD.

that are the reasons why I bought an external component

You are right. The only thing with external HDD+DVD recorder, is that the TV guide built in the panasonic doesnt work. Perhaps, the digital TV terminal' internal guide still works
