aco Veteran Posted May 17, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2002 This is bad, but we still have a year. Optus sources told AustralianIT that users under contract would continue to enjoy NetStats until their contracts expired, but after that would be forced onto the new plans. Optus is expecting all customers to switch to My Data Monitor by July 2003. Also, (going by the trouble Telstra had with implementing the infamous 3GB cap) I predict this will come into effect at a later date....Hopefully. :paranoid:
Vinh
i'm under a 12 month contract.. :) looks like i got another 8 months of about 17gigs a month :) but when it gets there... time to find a new cable provider. :dead:
Xe|oN
What about us people over in WA? If we want cable our only option is Telstra (way to expensive if u want a decent download limit) and it isnt available in all areas. The only broadband I can get is ADSL, but at the moment its not as fast as cable :(
altezza Veteran Posted May 17, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2002 I'm on Optus cable too. They finally will introduce new cap limit just to anticipate their big loss. I understand what they are up to, but all I can hope is not by following the same crap way as Telstra does (but they seem to be successful). 18 gig worth of data every month for $74.95 is exceptionally outstanding bargain. But keeping the price the same as current and they may lower the usage limit (I don't know how low they want) but do keep in mind that Optus has to retain its reputation as being the best broadband ISP in Australia. It was fast and before they introduce 3 gig limit, I was having unlimited usage. When they enforced 3 gig a month limit, I decided to discontinue my account with Telstra. While I consider 3 gig a month for broadband connection is piece of joke, well the world is laughing at Australia. I can do more than 3 gig on 56k modem, but the thing is Telstra have started it all at first and they destroyed the broadband growth in Australia. Now I'm in Melbourne and with Optus Cable Internet. Recently they introduce a new capped limit, but I still don't know how much the limit will be. But I certainly hope that they won't have the same crap limit as Telstra. I think you still have option to have ADSL. Try Netspace ADSL, they are available in Perth right now.

Xe|oN
Yup I was already looking into Netspace because my friend is with them. 10GB a month - 3gb peak and 7gb off-peak is about the best deal u get around here. $100 a month, mind you and if you want an ethernet modem its $500 setup nearly

nXP_151 Veteran Posted May 17, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2002 Aarggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh not again, I am not going to take this crap !!!!. But....after reading Australian IT and knowing my contract is 1 year, I wouldn't panic, but within next year if this plan is true, then I would have 5GB limit per month which is something I can't take, since I am a heavy downloader. But I can say Optus still better than Telstra, Telstra sucks. I do hope Optus isn't going to do this to us (Optus Customer).

Then protest by sitting in front of their offices and maybe that will get their attention.
d0tn3t
In all of new zealand (with the exception of wellington) all phone lines etc, are owned by telecom NZ. For around $59 a month we get 400megabytes of full-rate adsl. The alternative is $69 for 128k adsl which is capped at 5gb. What a joke.

You're not wrong. It's sad, hosting as well as bandwidth is relatively more expensive in Australia & NZ - probably due to lack competition and demand. :(
