[MLB] Roger Clemens signs with Astros for 1yr $18M

HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens is coming back for one more year -- and is getting the highest salary for a pitcher in baseball history.

The Rocket and the Houston Astros agreed Friday to an $18 million, one-year contract, and the seven-time Cy Young Award winner made the commitment to play for his 22nd major league season.

"I'm ready for the challenge. Here we go again," Clemens said.

Clemens, whose salary tops the $17.5 million Pedro Martinez earned with Boston last year in the option year of his contract, first retired after pitching for the New York Yankees in the 2003 World Series. But he changed his mind and agreed on Jan. 12 last year to join his hometown Astros, accepting a $5 million, one-year deal that was way below his market price.

He's a great pitcher, and I don't think the sum is unreasonable. I think alot of people are forgetting that how he plays isn't the only factor in how much they are paying him. It also largely has to do with other factors such as crowd attendance, which he will pack the stands for.

Let's say Clemens can, legit, pull in 10,000 extra fans everytime he pitches. 160/5 = 32. 32*10,000 = 32,000. At $40 a ticket, that's $1,280,000.

Say he's really worth about $5 mil. That $13 mil difference is about 325,000 $40 tickets, or about 2000 people every game. Maybe the Clemens Jerseys will make up the difference ;)

I live in Houston and the talk radio guys and most of the fans seem to be pumped up about his return. I am not a baseball fan but they did mention some numbers if you compare the salary he will be making in the upcoming season to the stats he put up last year: He went 18-4, so that is a million for every win, and greater than $5,000 per pich.

and greater than $5,000 per pich.

can i just throw like 20 in the MLB at that price?? i will be fine after that.

seriously... great pitcher. but THAT GREAT??? you better win the MVP, Cy Young, TITLE, and Series MVP if i pay you that much.

what a crock.

who the hell needs 18 million dollers a year to play baseball

im good with a couple hunderd thousand....and i dont even need that much

"your gonna pay me how much?? 800,000 dollers??...Ok and all i have to do is?...Ohh Swing a Big Stick and throw a Ball??..Sounds like a deal to me!"

like come on...i do tech support and i do way more then a baseball player does for less then 30gs a year...

i would love to get payed to play a game for a living...and 18 million is not what i would expect
