Tesseract
Old computers will somehow be recycled. More recent computers will probably run some form of Linux for serving.

Neztea
yah, probably they will recycle the old computers, but from what I heard, they send all the computers to some town in china, and they pull apart the diamons, gold, and the valuable material from the computer scraps, but the bad thing is some of them have very toxic material, which get into the water ways and pollutes it. I believe its known as the "trash dump of silicon city".
shockz
Yeah i heard that too. Is it true that 32 million cell phones are thrown away each year?
Winston
maybe older companies might want them e.g nasa wants 386 man eheh
altezza Veteran Posted May 19, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2002 Yeah I think they will recycle old computers, just to save up the resources much longer. They can re-use the recycled materials to make new products.

kintamanate
NASA needs YOUR old computer parts. Because their station and satelites/shuttles are made up of old computers. They are looking for "acient" parts. They will buy. They have lots of people searching e-bay for computer parts to fit their machines.
EmuZombie Veteran Posted May 19, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 19, 2002 actually, nasa's looking for parts much older then 386's... they're looking for 8086's :)

CaKeY
I think computers/components that are totally unusable should be melted down and recycled. However, I do believe that todays computers will remain quite useful for a relatively long time. I still have a couple sub-200mhz computers that are perfectly adaquate for simple tasks like email, internet and some programs and I put them to good use. I have a p133 on the network that I use as an mp3 server for the entire house.

UKer
I'm keeping hold of my old machine - a Amiga 500, 600 and 3000 and ZX Spectrum 48k+ - when they're 30-40 years old and (hopefully) still working I'm auctioning them on eBay as I even have boxes and all peripherals together with loads of software so I'm sure they'll be worth a bit someday.
