More nightmare for Aussie Optusnet Cable customers

Recommended Posts

Okay Optus cable users, here comes more nightmare:

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/05/...1801637639.html

Read all about it. Looks like Optus does have more people with jokes than what Telstra have. They will destroy their "once king of broadband" service as soon as 1 July this year.

Optus broadband users at present pay $74.95 a month for their service (packaged with telephony), which allows them to download as much information from the Internet as they like. From July 1, the Optus CableNet service will be available under four different pricing plans. These range from $54.95 a month with a 550MB download limit to $265.95 a month with a 10GB limit.

$265.95 for 10 gig limit? What a joke! Even Netspace ADSL users pay $99.95 for the same 10 gig limit. And $54.95 for 550 meg limit? I can do that within hours. Come to your senses, Optus!

This will not affect those who still on contract until their contract ends. I know I am still on contract until April 2003 but when this comes true then by the time the contract ends I will leave the service. Optus really a bunch of insane people.....mostly affected by Telstra.

Looks like Optus move will not be successful. I don't know how many of Optus users (who already have out of contract, but still continue to use) will leave the service should nightmare comes into reality.

Truly disappointing!

this is BULL**** just when i was gonna go get optus cable installed they go and do this :(

there goes my chance at getting a decent cable ISP

Hopefully they lose most of there user base to this and see how profitable it is to have 0 customers. :dead:

I don't live in australia, but I'd like to say what optus is doing is in my eyes...a complete ripoff....but it's not all their fault

The problem is bandwidth between australia and the rest of the continents is pretty damn expensive per mb...this is due to the fact that there is only one major fiberlink connecting them

A second fiberlink was layed, but so far there hasn't been ENOUGH usage to actually turn that fiber on (how ridiculous is that) so until the usage significantly increases to the point where they can buy bandwidth in huge cheaper bundles the aussie isp's will continue to get raped by the fiber holders..and the customers will in turn get raped...but the raping of the customers discourages use, less use = less bandwidth needed = not as good prices..and round and round we go

That sucks... and as for the 550 MB plan... watch me smoke that quota in about five days at most, especially with the internet radio I rigged up for my Mom--that's the bandwidth hog right there! :p

I use Optusnet cable, and it's a great service... although hearing this I'm thinking that Bigpond Advance isn't so bad after all... :(

Let them alone. By the time they realized losing customers and did not make profit then don't ask the disgruntled customers. And so be it if Optus keep it that way.

hey hey...I somehow manage to stay afloat with my download habits with 3 gigs a month from telstra...just gotta moderate what you download and find better download venues other than P2P networks (the upload AND download limit is an absolute b****). But I wouldn't be capable of paying ~ $250 for a 10 GB limit...

Edit: Hmmm...after visiting whirlpool.net.au, I found that the limits on Optus are soft limits: you get capped to 20-28 kbps after you finish using your limit. And the thing is, uploads are NOT counted! So running an fserve is theoretically possible with Optus. There are the 3 gig and 5 gig plans as well...seems to be better choice than telstra.

I know Optus still have better deal than Telstra. But just to wonder how many people will sign up for 5 gig or 10 gig account. I have paid the premium to get the best of broadband connection, but hey 3 gig usage a month? That's ridiculous! Even Optus new plans cheaper than Telstra, I can still do that on 56k dialup connection for around $25 a month. And the idea of dropping connection to 28.8kbps modem speed is unacceptable.

But don't be so assured about uploads not counted. They don't count upload, but they will tolerate those who upload too much. For example, running a P2P for sharing your Divx movie to others. That would constitute a breach of contract and they will terminate the contract.

Just think how many disgruntled Optus cable internet customers complaining about the new plan. They even try to threat Optus. Clearly Optus has been brainwashed by Telstra. I plan to leave the Optus once my contract finished (which is April 2003).

Those two main broadband ISP are destroying the broadband market growth in Australia. No wonder Australia is now a 3rd world country in terms of internet connectivity. And look at USA, Canada, South Korea where they can utilise broadband with cheaper price and higher usage limits. They are signing the significant growth in broadband market. But Australia broadband growth, don't expect that for at least another 5 years to keep up what those countries doing right now.
