How can I destroy the harddisk plates?

Recommended Posts

well, if you have really thick rubber gloves you could melt it really easily.

Get an extension cord (or equavilant) and a big piece of wood. Cut the extension end off, strip the wire back a lil ways and plug it in the wall. hold this to the top of the HDD and watch the sparks fly. I wouldn't recommend it but you would have 110V AC running though a 12V DC device, which should melt it beyond use. as for the platters you could take it apart before doing this and touch it to each platter. Other than that find a plumber friend and borrow his blowtorch and melt the platters the old fashion way. :)

OK. I finally managed to damage the plates. I used a huge hammer, a strong flat screwdriver, solid'n strong nippers. It took only 5 minutes. I was lucky enough to find a tiny hole on the side of the casing, then I went on opening the whole metal cover like a can. I reached the plates and scratched them all over and bended them. I'm now 100% sure that they are now history. Thanks to all!. Oh, BTW, the plates smell really nice. :)

Here are the pictures:

Uh, why did you do this again? Was your information that volitile? Jesus.. a bit overkill if you ask me. I would have just unscrewed the cover and shot it with a BB gun or something. Or thrown it in a lake.. something..

Hmm, funny you didn't like so many simple ideas and ended up doing all that. ;)

And no, driving over a hard drive won't damage any tires. ;)

Hammers work fine too, and you'd really have to explain why it would be "too noisy" to me.

What, are people killing you for doing it outside your home?

A clay flower pot, some iron filings, and a strip of magnesium....

So, no need for nuclear warheads or anything, right?

The thread was about how to do it, and not 'why'. I've got my reasons. Period. Even in a lake, water won't reach the plates coz it's so water-tight. That wouldn't be 'destroying' it, that would just be hiding it. I hope this is clear now.

Simple? It took me only five minutes and no bucks. What's simpler than that?

And no, driving over a hard drive won't damage any tires.

Depends on your speed, really.

'Cause I'm living in an apartment. I have neighbours complaining about everything.

What, are people killing you for doing it outside your home?

Why would I bother to go outside if I can do it at home?

I can't be the only who really wants to know whats on his HDD, he's so desperate to get rid of.

Yes I was thinking that too.

Porn?, Warez?, Credit Card number?, Bank Details?

Zero it a few times, try the bad ass kick ass software and see what you can recover, if nothing then use it in a Caddy.

The only true, 100% irrecoverable method for wiping data (what the DoD uses) is to use a Degausser. This uses an insanely powerful magnetic field to wipe the thing completely. Flipside is, those things are also insanely expensive (unless you happen to have a friend who has one that'll let you use it :D). An example of one is Here.

To be honest, unless you have something like nuclear secrets/billions of dollars of financial information, simply pouring salty water over it, leaving it for a day or so, burning it in a fire and then smashing it with a hammer will be good enough. The hammer alone should be okay, since data recovery is $$$$$, so unless either the person who wants the data values the data well above the value of data recovery, or the person who wants the data is the police, you'll be fine.

Btw - what was on it? ;)

if you want one sure fire way to make sure ur data isn't recoverd ?

C4 simple 1LB of C4 each side then just throw it in to a pit full of liquid O2 then detonate looks cool and ur data is safely in hell

I just put a power drill through the hole thing. In one side, out the other. Didn't have any bad data on it just got annoyed when I realised i'd got dust on it trying to do the clear window in hard drive mod :(.

You seem pretty good at no-no-ing the advice people give you. No-no this if you like, but I will tell you, this is pretty much one of the few ways that will actually make your data 100% unretrivable, should anyone spend the time/energy to attempt to do so. Burnt/Crushed platters can still have data reconstructed, by those who know what theyre doing. The police have people who do this sort of thing all the time.

Get either the torx head and unscrew the casing, or get a drill bit, and simply drill the screws out to get inside the case.

Take the platters, and apply them to a lathe, and very carefully take the surface off the platter. All that will be left is a very fine dust. Scatter the dust where you like, I suggest the local beach. Problem solved.

 he almost sounds like some criminal trying to destroy evidence or other illicit materials before the cops show up. however he is concerned about the well-being of others in regards to throwing it off the top of a building.

If you read the entire, I did not 'no-no' every advice. There were good and plausible ones. I applauded them. And there were others like pulling the harddisk apart on a train or something. Or using C4, magnesium strips, driving over it, etc... I wish only those who 'had' literally taken a harddisk apart, did reply.

Anyway.

Your advice is good. But for that I should take the plates out, which is really hard work and I'm satisfied with what I've achieved so far. On the other hand. The plates seem to be very hard metal. I couldn't bend them with my bare hands. And metal has a tendency to corrode. Heat and lots of oxygen would do real good harm, but this just came up from the top of my head. I could be wrong. Strong acids should work well, too. Degausser is good idea, but that's a lot of money. Probably only corporations can afford it. I was looking for a simple'n cheap solution.
