g-n-t
my hard drive is too loud  how can i spin it down? in the BIOS i set it to spin down after 3 minutes, but it doesnt work. ive been trying to do hdparm -S2 hda but it tells me hda is not a directory. how do i define my harddrive with hdparm, or better yet, is there a GUI for this? im using KDE. amoeba
No Linux expert but maybe it's hd0 hd1, etc?
g-n-t
nevermind. figured it out. Doh!. for anyone interested, its hdparm -S2 /dev/hda that spins it down after 10 seconds. each number is 5 seconds. so S1 would be 5, S3 would be 15, etc.
hornett
Not sure if you're actually planning to use 10 secs as the spin down time but I really wouldn't recommend it. It will wear down the drive having it spin up and down constantly. IMO 3 mins is still too short :) Edit: I'm sure you know what you're doing, didn't mean to sound patronising.
