Wizz
I'm setting up a small linux intranet server. It's been cobbled together from pieces of junk so bear with me. It's got: Pentium 133 MHz 16 mb of RAM 750mb Hard drive 540mb Hard drive 320mb Hard drive 4x CD-Rom drive Which distro would be best for this spec? It must have RPM installed automatically. Could never manage to compile that one myself.
zivan56
Im running slackware 7.1 on an AM486 DX100, so it should run very decently on your system, the only downside is you have to configure x server manually (which takes quite a while if your new to linux). Or you can get Freesco (All the features), it has a built in router/webserver/dhcp server/client and lots of other stuff on a 1.44mb floppy disk, it even has a setup wizard which makes it easy to set up for specfic needs. It is also very easy to install packages for it you just type: installpkg http://www.whatever.com/packages/apache and it downloads/installs/configures it for you. You can move the installation to the harddrive by running move2hdd.
BroChaos Veteran Posted May 28, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2002 i don't know any specifically, but maybe head over to www.distrowatch.com, and look at the descriptions of some of the distros. i'm sure they'll have a couple lightweight ones that will do what you are looking for. Hatter
I'm running Slackware 8.0 on a 100MHz laptop w/ 40MB of RAM. Slackware should suit that box perfectly. RAM would be a top prioirty if it is a server, however. -Hatter
Tim Dorr Veteran Posted May 28, 2002 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2002 I'd just install an older version of redhat for the ease of install then upgrade everything as neccessary...

Xe|oN
Im running Debian on a P133, 32MB RAM, 500MB hdd as my router/server and it works really well. I access the machine mostly via ssh (it runs without a monitor) but also by webmin. I'd definately have to recommend Debian :)
MulletRobZ
If you want Mandrake, I recommend using version 6.0, then upgrade the kernel to the latest version.
