the setting on the bottom LEFT with the jumpers on the righ and left. Put the drive on IDE channel 1 and at the end of the IDE cable, try removing all over drives for now too. Go into the BIOS and see if it detects it then

I really cant do anything more for you, have your BIOS set to boot IDE 0, set the jumper settigns to master (as in the picture below, the BOTTOM LEFT option) and put the IDE cable in IDE channel 1 (sometimes 0) on the motherboard and have the drive at the END of the IDE cable

  • 1 month later...

I just bought this hdd and had no problems .. so I will ask a few questions ..

Using an ATA compat cable.. are you sure its connected in the right sequence?

you want it as master. so is the clip on the closest 2 pins next to the IDE cable socket?

You should not need to do anything in the bios to make it work. if it wont auto detect there is something else wrong with it.

Try setting the jumper to cable select. I had a problem with a drive one time and it would detect when it was set to master if it was the only drive on the primary IDE bus. This may be the case with yours.

Shafi, depending on your current system hardware, I may have the solution for you.

I attempted to install the Maxtor DiamondMax D740X 40GB 7200 RPM HDD into my P3-550E workstation here at home. I tried everything from swapping out IDE cables, screwing with jumpers on both HDD's and even disconnecting everything but the new HDD, but nothing worked.

It turned out that the motherboard that I was attempting to install the HDD IDE device to (a MyComp TI6NBD) has a BIOS limitation that can only address IDE devices with a capacity of 32 GB's or smaller. Since the drive was 40 GB's, the BIOS was unable to detect the IDE device and caused the computer to hang on start-up.

The solution...

Either flash your BIOS up to the newest version, or go out and purchase a PCI IDE Controller such as the Abit Hot-Rod 66/100/133 unit or anything by HighPoint.

If your system is fairly new (having a motherboard with any of the Intel 8xx series of chipsets or the Via Apollo Pro 133 or later), then it could be a drive malfunction (were common on the 6L040J2 and 6L060J3) or else a cabling issue.
