What GeForce?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be getting a new video card next month and it is going to be one of the GeForce series. However, I can't spend a lot more than $150 CDN ($100 US) on the video card. This is going to be part of my PC remodeling project. Anyone got any suggestions?

BTW: If the video card's DDR, can I use it on a machine that only uses SDRAM?

Buy any card you want as high or low end as you want, the card's onboard RAM operates independantly from your main RAM. Just make sure you have the proper AGP slot to support it, 2X or 4X will do just fine. IMHO, nVIDIA is the only way to go for a graphics accelerator.

Yes, of course. A video cards ram 'type' has no bearing on the rest of the system.

Thanks for the info about the DDR issue. However, the cards that I was interested in were either the GeForce 2 GTS, GeForce 2 Ultra, GeForce 2 Titanium, or any of the GeForce 3 cards! A 500 MHz P3 should be able to handle that no problem! Let me know of further recommendations!

Canada is a country by itself, and yes... it was a colony founded by the nice folks from UK, just like USA was... and you know, colonies are considered as a part of the country responsible for it :p

Do you need more info? :D

I'm torn between a GeForce 3 TI200 128 DDR, and the GeForce 4 TI4200 128 DDR. I won't be playing a lot of games, but some. Such as the X-Files, Spider-Man: The Movie, Max Payne, and related games..will I see a huge difference from the GeForce 3 to the GeForce 4? Also, how much more can the GeForce 3 be overclocked to?

EDIT: Err..I just checked the prices and the difference between the cheapest Gainward GeForce 3 TI200 and the GeForce 4 TI4200 is only $43..BTW sorry if I'm a bit off topic.

why? if any MX the 4MX, but even better get a Geforce 4 Ti 4200.

using SDRAM is not recommended, you'll see poor performance, but better than what you've been using.

So that would be about this if I did it right:

4200 - $230 CAD

4400 - $345 CAD

4600 - $460 CAD

A little over your 150 but not around 700, so I guess it's your decision (well obviously) :D

Why dont yall specify which currency your useing, instead of justt saying 130$ say 130$ usd, or cad. Anyway I bought my Geforce 3 Ti 200 at bestbuy for 140$ USD a couple months ago. If your in the market for a new vid. card get a Geforce 4 Ti4200, its around the same price as the Geforce 3 Ti200, Also dont forget to OC to its fullest potential.

The GeForce 4 Ti4200's can't be that cheap, man! GeForce 4 Ti4200's are $230 and the GeForce 3 Ti500's can be bought for aroung $150 - $160! The GeForce 4 MX is $200! BTW, that is in Canadian Dollars!

I finally bought my video card earlier today. The GeForce 3's that were available in Moncton cost almost $300 CDN and they were Ti 200 128 MB models. Therefore, I settled on a GeForce 4 MX 420 AGP. That video card costed $160 CDN, and don't think I'd get a better deal than that! :D So I'm going to give that a try with Windows 2000 (If my new motherboard will allow the full 30 GB to be used) and Linux-Mandrake 8.2 as soon as I get myself a case! Hopefully, I can get Quake 3 Arena and Empire Earth to work correctly, and maybe P will be able to run more smoothly, LOL! :p
