"cmd" via start > run doesn't work anymore

Recommended Posts

When I type "cmd" in the run box of my Windows Server 2003 SP1, I don't get the command prompt window, instead I get this screen:

cmd2.jpg

- I'm connecting via RDP and with the administrator account

- security on the cmd.exe file in windows\system32 is correct (administrators have the necessary access)

- Clicking on the "command prompt" shortcut in programs > assecoires does work

- Typing command in the runbox does work, but it's not the same window (can't be closed with the X, and doesn't support long filenames...

Is this behaviour by default? Is this since SP1? How can I fix this?

Its supposed to bring up a dos prompt.

He meant typing it in with the .exe part.

Is there another file with a name that starts with "cmd."? Like a bat file etc.

There is probably an extensionless file named "cmd" in your Windows folder (or one of the PATHs before c:\windows\system32). Running "cmd.exe" as suggested should work.
