Close tabs (cycling pages)

Recommended Posts

I would like to know if there is any way of controlling the

cycling order of tabs inOpera and Firefox because whenever

closing the tabs, the remain tabs appear in order of the last

page viewed, unlike Maxthon that cycles pages along the tool

bar from the right to the left regardless of what page you

decide to start closing... i like this feature....

any ideas?

For Opera, you can use the 1 and 2 keys to cycle the tabs left and right respectively. It wrap around if you reach one end. You can also hold the right mouse button down and scroll the wheel to show a horizontal list of tabs ordered exactly the same as they appear on the tab bar.

You can change how Opera cycles from the Preferences - just look for a drop down list titled "cycle pages". But it does load the tab to the left if you close the current tab. The z-order is maintained in Opera.

thats not what i mean, all i want is to be closing the opened tabs, as in just closing them from the right hand corner to the left hand corner, like Maxthon

I don't have an answer for you, in fact I am also looking for the same solution.

Every browser I have used, TheWorld, Netscape 8, Maxthon, and even the AOL Beta make using the TABs much easier and simpler. First they are placed closer to your work, they build from left to right or in some cases that can be changed, and all require only a double click on the TAB button to deactivate where Opera is still using cumbersome keyboard shortcuts or right clicking with mouse and choose close or worse yet...click on the little X.

The Opera guys did so well on everything else but really blew it on the TAB's ease of use...odd because Tabbed Browsing is what Opera claims to have invented!

Not quite sure what the original poster is referring to, but I have a tab-related question as well. Is it possible in Opera to use the Rightclick+mousewheel to scroll the pages in order from left to right? I know that you can set it up to go right to left, but it shows that annoying list of the open tabs. I have firefox set up to switch directly, right to left.

I hate this last-used tab order. Just testing Opera 8 out for now, to see if it can switch me from FF, but things don't look too good.

I think this is the option you're looking for in the Opera 8 final..

Nope, that brings up that annoying list I was talking about...

Are you looking to have the tabs cycle the opposite of how Opera does it with page bar order? Is that what you are looking for?

[As for "last used, " seems to be an interesting discussion. I can't stand left to right tab cycling. Last used is the most logical and useful for me, though more so the way Opera utilizes it, unlike less powerful tabbed browsing like Firefox (which I can't stand at all unless I use TabBrowser Extension, making it like Opera). Guess it's what you get used to first. I make Firefox tabs more like Opera, and apparently Firefox users want Opera more like Firefox.]

Yeah, it's all about what you get used to. I have skipping around in the bar, I like to see how "far away" I am from the tab I want to get to, so I know whether to scroll fast or slow; with the last used order, there's no way of telling unless you scroll until you get there. Either way, there should be options for both. Just more comfort for FF users.

when i close a tab in opera, id like it to go to the one before it, instead of the last used tab, is there any way to set that up, or am i stuck with it? :(

Hmmm... Yes, it's problem. It's does not work for me too! Maybe it is bug. BUT....

Temporary solution to fix bad cycling pages:

1. Go to http://nontroppo.org/wiki/CustomButtons

Find button "Close current page & switch to previous one" and drag it into any Opera's toolbar. I recommend to drag it into right corner of Address Bar. Use this button to close current page and switch previous.

2. Go to Keyboard Setup (preferences - advanced - shortcuts) and press EDIT button. Quick Find "w ctrl"

Edit Actions to "Close page & Switch to previous page"(without quotes)

Save changes and press OK

3. If you using mouse gestures go to Mouse Setup (preferences - advanced - shortcuts). Click EDIT.

Quick find "GestureDown, GestureRight" and change its actions to "Close page & Switch to previous page"(without quotes)

Save changes and press OK

it's work fine.

Now after closing pages it will switch to previous order. It's like Firefox tab closing style.

And another question that i have:

-On firefox, when i go to the bookmarks menu, i can middle-click on the chosen one to open it on a new page. On Opera, i must SHIFT-Click it to get the same behavior.

Anybody know a way to activate the middle-clicking on the Opera bookmarks?

There no way. But you can use alternatives:

1. Move your most visiting bookmarks to personal bar directly. Middle button opening working fine with bookmarks placed personal bar directly.

2. Use Bookmark panel(Ctrl+2 or click on display left side) and Quick Find field. It's very usable for quick find bookmark and go to it. Middle button opening also working fine on bookmarks panel.
