Pink Floyd Veteran Posted April 20, 2005 Veteran Share Posted April 20, 2005 that's a very nice idea I already use a mod version The one with the icon bottom right to access options and you can right clic
IceDogg
Yea, that's the mod that they added whitelist too. Also I got the whitelist to work now. It doesn't work like I thought it would though. If for example you allow ads on neowin.net by adding filter @@neowin.net it doesn't allow all ads on neowin.net to work..only ads that come from neowin.net itself. So, it works in reverse of blocking ads filters. Not exactly what I was looking for.. hopefully they will fix this soon.

IceDogg
This extension has now been improved to allow entire site whitelisting. This is the feature that will allow you to add a site to the whitelist and no mater what site the ad comes from it will display. It is of course an option. So under options you will have to select site whitelisting. Now you can fully support you favorite sites (ie Neowin.net) and still block ads on any or all other sites. llbbl
The last official release was 0.5 . http://adblock.mozdev.org/dev.html Here is the post about it in the mozillaZine forums. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=266291 I guess that bene.sitesled is really the homepage for Adblock. Pink Floyd Veteran Posted June 6, 2005 Veteran Share Posted June 6, 2005 well I dont think the original adblock is still in developpement and considering most ppl use a mod of adblock, yeah bene site could be a good one to look
IceDogg
It is the official homepage of the mod version of adblock with whitelistng, which is what this thread is about. It's not the official version of adblock..but it is the only one with the whitelist. I'm all for supporting the original makers of the mod, but most people have been needing whitelist for a long long time, and until the official version of adblock has it I'll be using this unofficial (mod) version. I take nothing away from the makers of adblock.. they made an awesome extension and my thanks to them for it.
DigeratiPrime
The official adblock extension hasnt been updated in a long time, this is the one thats getting support and updates. btw how exactly do you whitelist neowin for example? If I add this filter "@@neowin.net" the ads are still hidden/removed? Under Adblock Options all i see is "Site Blocking" and having that checked doesnt make a difference apparently. IceDogg
It sounds to me like it didn't install correctly for you. This is what the adblock plus options should look like. See the check by the one that says "Site Whitelisting" that's the one that allows the new function. If you don't see this list under adblock options then you don't have adblock plus installed, or at least not the latest one. It also calls itself adblock plus in the EM (extension manager). Check to make sure you have the right one installed. It's version 0.5.7+ Edit: My link in the first post is the correct one to get this version. DigeratiPrime
Thanks for the screenshot. Indeed I do NOT have "Site Whitelisting" under options. I am using Firefox 1.0.4 and I have 15 other extensions installed. I initially had trouble uninstalling the previous version 0.5.6 so i deleted the user profile folders and the program directory, even with a fresh install i do not see it :(

I still have the DIVs blocked, especially on NeoWin. 586050355[/snapback] I'm not a programmer, but I think he's done some work recently on the DIV stuff. Granted I'm not real sure what that is..LOL. Might try getting adblock plus again, it will show the same version number but get it anyway. He's doing dev builds or something.. it had some extra stuff when I got it yesterday (but same version number). Hope this helps you.
mcm_ham
I just got pointed to this thread and might be able to answer some of the questions that are here. Basically between releases I post what I'm working on to the first post of a mozillazine thread where people can test it out and report back problems. I refer to these as developer builds and is denoted by a '+' after the version number. These will change quite often whenever I make fix or change I want feedback on, see the changes or known issues list. Bene sometimes hosts a snapshot of these builds when he feels there is some important fix or new feature added and there appears to be no reported problems at the time. Site Whitelisting is something that has been added since the last release so if you want it then you will have to download the development build. DigeratiPrime follow this post to do a clean install of Adblock. http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic.php?t=719 I haven't really made any changes to the code that blocks DIVs except I've put a workaround for one of G's filters in his filterset.g that can block entire articles on Neowin and other sites. Unfortunately he's only interested fixing false positives with the Official version. I also added the adblock.divcheck preference at the same time so it won't work if you just create that preference using a non-developer build of Adblock Plus. You can see this post for more details: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.ph...1526227#1526227 DIVs are just a way to divide up an article or site in html. Quite often text based ads and other such unwanted content is placed in DIVs and this new feature allows you to block them. Previously this was impossible with Adblock and people were resorting to adding entries to the userContent.css file in their profile folder to block such ads. Unfortunately these aren't passed to Adblock's "shoud load" function (hence why the official Adblock doesn't remove them) and are removed once the page has downloaded by using a loop to check the entire page for DIVs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As an example of how DIV blocking is useful lets see how we can go about blocking ads on this page (for demonstartion purposes I suggest removing all your filters after you backed them up first by exporting them from Adblock's Options menu): www.wininformant.com A simple filter like this will block all the ads on the page that the normal Adblock can block: /[\W_]ads?\W/ There are also the popup ad links you get when you hover your mouse over the words highlighted in green. This filter removes those. /\Wintellitxt\W/ Now you are left with the monthly online pass ad and the ad about dice in the article. These are wrapped in DIV sections and can't be blocked by normal Adblock. What you can do is open up the "Adblockable Items" panel by left clicking on the Adblock text or icon at the bottom of the browser. Then select the DIVs one by one until you find the ad have a red outline around it that blinks red. For this site you will find listed these two entries for the monthly pass ad. http://www.windowsitpro.com/...html#DIV(mo...ypassdynamicad) http://www.windowsitpro.com/...html#DIV(mo...passdynamicad1) And the for ad about dice this one: http://www.windowsitpro.com/...html#DIV(dicetextad) Therefore a filter like this will remove both those ads: /(dynamic|te?xt)ads?/ And your done, an ad free article. :D Edited June 18, 2005 by mcm_ham
IceDogg
Welcome to Neowin mcm_ham. I'm glad you come to this thread to help people with your extension mod (if you will). This is one of the developers of adblock plus, he can help you far better then I can. Thanks again mcm_ham, and I hope you check back in this thread. Great work you are doing! EDIT: PS. you said g's filter doesn't use the DIV enhancements, can you point to a filter list we can add to his filter list to take up the slack, so to speak? mcm_ham
Thanks for the warm welcome IceDogg :). I wasn't necessarily meaning to say G's filterset doesn't work on blocking DIV sections. It will if one of his filters matches the DIV name, hence why articles on betanews were being blocked and why I had to put the workaround in. But's it true that his filterset could be optimized further to block a lot more ads buried in DIV sections then it currently is. Unfortunately I don't know of many other good filter sets. Here's a couple of tips regarding blocking DIVs though if anyone interested, if you want to create filter that will only match DIVs then start your filter with: /#DIV.* For example /ads?/ will block all ads on www.wininformant.com (not a recommended filter normally too many false positives). But /#DIV.*ads?/ only blocks the DIVs. If you want to create a filter that never blocks DIVs then end your filter with: .*[^)]$/ For example /ads?/ will become /ads?.*[^)]$/ and will block all the ads on www.wininformant.com except the DIVs. EDIT: P.S. I guess I can't edit my other post again to try and make it a lot shorter until I've built up my reputation up by making lots of posts can I? DigeratiPrime
Thanks mcm_ham :) I followed the link, but it seems to be broken. Also I did do a clean install of firefox: first uninstall Firefox, then delete the Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and the Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Mozilla folder, then reinstall firefox and add extensions. It still didnt show up in adblock options. I will try the dev build later today. Also here is a filter list with static filename so you can synchronize with adblock plus: http://www.fanboy.co.nz/adblock/
mcm_ham
Yeah, it appears to have been down for the last couple of days :( Bene, decided to start running a forum for Adblock Plus as a result. http://p2.forumforfree.com/adblockplus.html

pierceive
In response to the demand from Adblock Plus users, I'm releasing an experimental whitelist (Filterset.G-Whitelist-Beta) to complement Filterset.G. http://www.pierceive.com/ Note that this is a BETA whitelist; I don't use Adblock Plus for my normal browsing, and Filterset.G (the blacklist) remains my top priority. Most people still use the official version of Adblock, so Filterset.G will remain optimized for it. Filterset.G-Whitelist-Beta will stack on top of Filterset.G to improve the experience of Adblock Plus users.
