I don't know 250 people..:(

You don't have to know 250 people. You just need to promote Opera so that 250 people click your affiliate link.

Anyway, Opera is so cluttered. The room for the window doesn't have room to display as much as in FF and IE.

Cluttered?! If you remove the ads, you have far more page viewing space with opera 8 than with Firefox.

No I don't. I don't have ads. What I do have is in default 7.54, the top and left side is huge.

EDIT: I'm not using Opera 8.

There really isn't much room for the window. The top is 3 bars (until I figure out how to change it) and there is a large bar and the left-side. Not even close to Firefox or IE.

IE, is just as fast as Firefox in most all instances, and if you say Im wrong abou that, .. your just plain ignorant.
1. IE - SIMPLY FOR ITS COMPATABLITY WITH MOST EVERY SINGLE SITE IN THE FREE WORLD, AND HAS DECENT SPEED.

2. FIREFOX - QUICKER, GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME, LACKS SUPPORT FROM TOO MANY PAGES ..

 That made very little sense.

That made very little sense.

He basically said that Firefox is faster but it's only on occasions, most of the time they are practically equal. Because of the mostly-unnoticable speed difference, he chooses to use Internet Explorer for its compatibility with web sites.

I've seen plenty Firefox vs Opera threads, and I gotta admit this is the first I've ever seen that has not turned into a full-on flamewar. :)

I won't vote since I've been a Opera user for the last couple of years, I do have Firefox installed but very rarely use it. This is due to the fact that to acheive the nearly same functionality that Opera has out of the box with a mere 3.59 mb download (including mail client) I would have to install at least 8 extensions on top of Firefox + mail client.

There has been a lot of different reasons why some prefer Firefox over Opera, I will deal with just a few of them here.

Not having to click on the "wand" everytime I wanted it to remember my passwords/usernames.

Not 100% sure what you meant, but I assume you talk about when you want to log in using the wand. It's very simple, just press CTRL + Enter.

sorry for off-topic but is there any way to make Opera close tabs by double clicking on them?

Since Opera 8 you have a small X on each tab that can be used for closing them (can be disabled), this takes an hour or so getting used to, initially I hated it and disabled it. But after a while I decided to give it a go and now I find it very neat.

You can also with a simple .ini edit add the option to close tab in the pop-up menu you get when right clicking a page. Ask and I will tell you how.

Same here, I hate using firefox but I use it to avoid using IE in college. I use the USB version, if only opera would work correctly from the drive

Opera can be put on a USB stick as well, not as easily as with Firefox but it can be done. Opera on a stick

Lol no. I tried it-And hated it. Just seems really buggy compared to Firefox.

Woow... that post say a lot and believe me it's not about Opera. If you are going to complain about ANY software being buggy it's a very good idea to give examples. Now you just seem like a ignorant fool.

i switched from firefox to opera...but after about 2 minutes returned to firefox.

my reason: its just not as customisable as firefox, and i really love how firefox is setup and stuff.

How did you possibly reach that conclusion in two minutes? that is like someone who only used Paint for years would try Photoshop CS2 for 2 minutes and say "It worked differently so I did not understand it, so Paint is better." And belive me it is NOT!

FYI Opera is very customizable. Want to change a skin? click the download and Opera will immediately change skin (no need to restart Opera), and ask if you want to keep the new skin or not. I can easily try 10 uninstalled skins in 45 seconds.

Icons, drag and drop them where you like.

Toolbars, right click any toolbar and you'll be able to select which ones you want to add/remove. And this is just a few of the many things that can be done.

The ad argument is valid as this is really about personal preferences. I use a paid version of Opera, but I used to have a cracked one. My philosophy is if it's worth having it's worth paying. Besides Opera do not have the advantage of having big corporations like IBM etc. throwing money at them as Firefox do. And from whom do you think IBM get those money? yup, that's right from IBM customers. So like it or not, since you most likely use products from one one or more of Firefox's sponsors you are indirectly paying for Firefox, you just don't know how much.

I could actuall be completely honest and say "I don't like FF because even if I don't use it iI still have to pay for it, since I use/buy products from several of their sponsors" at least Opera only charge the people who want to pay for it.

As for Opera crashing, do you use Zone Alarm Security Suite? If so I can almost guarantee that's the cause. There are plenty of other more serious problems with ZASS. I can leave Opera running for days (I occasionally do) without a single crash, that's what I call stable software.

Finally, for those of you that plan to test Opera try right clicking around on webpages, links, download links. Try different kinds of mouse button/wheel combinations there are plenty of cool stuff that can be done.

Hell I don't even need to have the tabs displayed, I can swith between tabs by holding down the right mouse button and roll the wheel, and select what tab to open by rolling down/up to it in a small pop-up menu. And the mouse in combination with the keyboard also offers some neat stuff.

And for those that complain about Tabs being too high and Opera too cluttered, have a look at my Minimalist Opera. When taking the screen shoot I had 6 tabs open. The reason you don't see the tabs is because I use the right mouse button - wheel to switch tabs. And to close tabs I also use the mouse, I can choose between: Close all, Close all but active and Close active.

Did someone say Opera can not be customized?

Opera does not support XSL formatting objects, and neither does it natively support XSLT transformations. XML documents transformed server side will be parsed and displayed by Opera just like any other XML document.

Source

XSLT should be done on the server side. If you run a server, it can handle that kind of processing. You can't be sure that the client can. So do it on the server, and don't rely on the client to do heavy processing tasks for you.

I just switched today, and so far I am incredibly happy with version 8.

-Was extremely easy to customize my toolbars how I wanted them, only have one thing left to do.

-Themes could be downloaded quickly and easily through the options panel, and were downloaded and applied in a matter of seconds. No opening new windows, no restarting Opera etc. Nice.

-The browser is much more responsive and faster performing than FF was for me.

-I'm impressed with it's base feature set, especially considering its filesize.

-Sites seem to load faster so far.

-Everything seems layed out in a logical, easy to learn manner. Quick Preferences was quite handy, a comprehensive list of keyboard commands took no searching to find, it was right where I'd expected it to be, etc.

I do have one question, however. How can I make a bookmarks folder toolbar to the right of the File, edit, view menu? I have my bookmarks organized in folders, like forums, gaming etc, and I want those folders to be displayed to the right of the menu.

Also, is there anything like ad-block for Opera, in terms of ease-of-use? I know you can add filters to an ini file, but I want something easier and quicker than that.

I'm still using Internet Explorer

May the lord be with you, you're going to need it. Haha no I'm just kidding, I can't stop taking digs at IE though. It's good to see more people are moving to Opera, although I think the majority still lies with Firefox. Give Opera a good chance and I'm sure you'll adapt quickly. (I'm not talking 20 min chance either, give it a week to sink in).

edit: @Raum - http://www.monroeworld.com/operafilter/ (It's an easy to use ad filter :))

I didn't switch to Opera at all.

Instead, I have been switching back and forth between Firefox and IE. Finally, I still stick with IE, but I also use Firefox from time to time. In fact, I am replying this thread in Firefox right now...

Well originally I was all for Firefox, then I tried opera and was impressed but at the time (version 7.54) it didn't impress me enough to make me change. Now however it's a different story. Since 8.0 it has become my default browser and I'm now running the 8.01 preview release and I'm just loving it. It would seem their next release is going to focus on standards so that it reduces the issues with page rendering which is just brilliant :)
